7000kbps but still slow when surfing

Post by blokie »

HI There,
I'm getting over 7 mbps with 3 pc on the same network with a dlink wifi router to a rogers motorola modem. 2 pc are cat 5, 1 is wireless.
The problem, if any one of the 3 pc's does any p2p, even slow 25 k/s up and down, the other 2 struggle to get internet access. I mean, we can get access but its sloooowwww.I've got the router set up so its porting to the right pc's but it doesnt seem to make any differance.
Even if the pc I'm useing is downloading, if I try to browse the net from the same pc, its still slow.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

P2P consumes much of your upload bandwidth. Without significant upload bandwidth, your download speed falls as your comp cannot send out receipt acknowledgements to the sending server. Thus, sending servers just keep retransmitting the same data packets to you.

A router can only handle a finite number of simultaneous connections (64-128). If your P2P is using most of these connections, other applications on any of the comps will be crowded out.

Solution:

Limit the global upload speed of your P2P client to 40-50% of what your ISP gives you.

Limit the max. number of connections per task and the number of running tasks in your P2P.

Hi Trogers,
I have my global upload set to 25 kb/s which is well bellow my 45kb/s that I get from my ISP.
When I get home I will limit the number of connections and try that. What would be a good number to set it to.

Thanks

If you are in the US, try setting RWIN to 256960.

You can try the following settings in your torrent client:

Default no. of connections per task - 10
Max. no. of connections per task - 14
Max. no of running task - 7

Thus your torrents will use up a max. no. of simultaneous connections of 98, leaving 30 for your other applications.

Hi Trogers,
actually I'm in Ontario,Canada, so would the RWIN setting be the same?
I'm useing Utorrent and in my preferences I have it set for:
Global maximum number of connections- 80
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent- 14
Number of uploads per torrent - 8

Number of connections and tasks seems okay. You can fine-tune them accordingly.

RWIN set to 256960 would give you a max. latency of 290ms, enough to cover surfing to the US and the EU.

Max. Latency = 256960 x 8 / 7000 = 294ms

HI Trogers,
I've got to thankyou sir, the advice you gave me has improved my home network a 100%.
Not only can I download and surf at the same time, it also does not affect any other pc on the network either.
Thank you again for your help.

Chris
