NTFS all the way (for windows OS anyhow)

And what security "crap" bothers you?

I dont see anything more security wise stuff in 2k than in 9x (visually)

NTFS, is faster, less fragmentation, more stable.... ITS THE BEST :D

You are obviously one of many that has been consumed by the rumors of programs not working on windows 2000

The truth is almost verything works fine.

If it doesnt.. its probably cheap and not worth having.

I havent had one program dislike 2k (except for a 9x version of a program... i downloaded the 2k version and it worked fine)

I think its the only way to go as far a 2k is concerned on a network, home or otherwise, and of course you have to if you go the AD route. Fragmentation is definetly less than with FAT and it handles hard shutdowns and power outages much more gracefully(MFT).

btw..prey uses 9x last time i heard

I use Win2k and I use NTFS on all my PCs and its great, no problems at all. Fat32 should be used only for Win9x, its an old technology. NTFS supports a lot more security and is faster. If you are sharing MP3s or something between OS's or something, put the mp3s on the fat32 hd so you can access em between both OS's. Hope that helps.

I preferr FAT32 over NTFS.

When I ran NTFS it really seemed to run alot slower than FAT32 and Norton Utilities caused a grip of errors on NTFS as well.

From what I understand NTFS has added security and is supposed to be more stable, not the case with my system.
I ran a duel boot and couldn't see the win2k partition in Win98, didn't really care for that, I like to work with both OS's so if I have work in 2k and I am useing 98 I can't access with the NTFS partition, but with FAT32 I could jump back and forth within each OS.

I hope this helps some. :)

NTFS all the way. For every reason sited so far. I would NEVER run fat32 on any of my computers or on any of my networks.

Security isnt really that important for home users, just use Zone Alarm or something to keep out internet hacks and the like.
Stability is a definate plus in NTFS, but utilities like Norton don't like it too well, this should be fixed in new 2002 version thou.
EvilAngel is right, the only real problem is that Win9x can't see a NTFS partition, Win2k running on NTFS can see a Fat32 Partition though (Just like Linux being able to see win but win partitions cant see Linux without a little help)

Heya Minir,

I'm using NTFS. It's fast and all, but its not compatable with Fat32, so it makes swapping out files on different drives a bit difficult.

I've heard people say that Fat32 is actually faster than NTFS. The best advice I can give you is to try out both formats and see which one benefits you better. It might take more time reinstalling and formating, but in the end it will be worth it because your system will be optimized for you!

Geez Thanks for all of your responses.

it appears to be about a 50/50 situation at the moment

good points on both sides.

ultimately it appears more related to how you use your comp.

i wil follow along for a few days to see what else turns up

interesting though is it not..

Thanks again

ok this security "crap" is not as much file system related as it has to do with Win2k which uses NTFS

I tried to network 2 comps 1x Win98SE and 1x Win 2k at one time....
I tried EVERYTHING I could possibly think of....
no-go...
later, the friend I did it for upgraded the Win98SE system to W2km and guess what?
We had the Network up and running in no time....

but since NTFS goes with Win2k, NT4 (??not sure about that)

I say NTFS sux....

I'd some seriouse problems working on NTFS. M$ Says 2K is more stable, however, I have had the same problems with 2K as I ahd with NT. not worth the half hour to convert my 45+ gig drive to NTFS

I usually do a 2 gig win98 FAT partition with win2k as my second os NTFS. Don't be afraid of the good old FAT format guys. If win98 goes nutty, I just have 2 gigs to deal with and I put all my proggies on a "stuff" partition FAT 32.

Norm. You might want to check out a program called GoBack at http://www.roxio.com/en/products/goback/index.html .

I use it on W98SE, and am always messing with the registry. If I totally crew up the PC. I just revert the entire drive back to before i messed it up. It has saved my Butt many, many, many times. :D

I agree with Evilangel with a dualboot system it is better to use FAT32 Although I have tryed NTFS and it did not give me any problems.
