Hi, I'm actually the host over at the OOL forum on broadbandreports.com

Most of the original claim seems to have little factual backing.

We have a very busy OOL forum at bbr and while OOL does cap, it certainly doesn't seem to have a set limit as ...

I'm in the max windows camp myself.

I think I had once read that it's just something real deep inside windows and this issue will never be "fixed".

Give WinMX a try. Make sure you get 2.6. Major changes.

They now have a P2P system so don't need servers.

No spyware. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't gotten it in a few weeks to download this version and try.

You must not have downloaded WinMX 2.6!

They have a new p2p system set up so you don't need the musiccity servers anymore.

Give it a try. I think it's the best out there, by far, now.

Still a bit buggy, but it's getting close to being great.

Not really. On Optimum Online a few people did an experiment and changed their motorola surfboard or 3com sharfin for a terayon terajet and speeds went from about 5-6Mbps to 8Mbps.

That doesn't mean the terajet is better, just under certain conditions, it's faster.

dslreports is not a "dsl" site, it's for all.

I can't believe no one suggested to email a file to yourself to test your u/l speed.

Open up that netstat live or dumeter or something and email a 5+MB file to yourself and see what your speed is.

Much more reliable than a speed test.

At least on OOL ...

your dsl speeds should be about 85% of what's advertised, so you should know that variable.

Go to dslreports.com and see how @home IN YOUR AREA performs and then you'll have more to go on to make a final decision.

Oh, and Matt, try that with a larger file, as you even pointed out, everything is inaccurate for the first 10 secs or so. To get your REAL speed, try a file at least 20MB and take the screen shot at the very end.

You might want to pick the one that "looks best" to you or has the best warrantee.

As long as you use an ethernet connection and not the usb port, you should get about the same from each of the modems.

Personally, I vote for the terajet, but that's just because I have ...

Steve,

As I think you said you have Optimum Online, I'd suggest you use an RWIN of 64240. That's what most ppl on OOL are using as per engineers recommendataions.

Also, your best/most accurate OOL speed test is:

If you are in a Verizon area where you can get Optimum Online cable, you'll get similar speeds for $30/mo.

The answer to this is simple.

It depends TOTALLY on YOUR own area.

It some areas DSL kicks cable's butt, in some cable destroys DSL. All depends on where you live.

You might want to go to dslreports.com and seach providers by zip to see what speeds are in your area.
