Computer Lag

Post by Gza »

Not sure if this has been posted before... did a search and couldn't find my exact problem. Anyway, usually when my PC's doing some activity, it seems to lag (mouse won't move, MP3's sorta stutter - same effect as pressin ctrl + alt + delete, etc.). I usually get this kinda lag when say, pics are loading up in IE. I did a check for any IRQ conflicts, and the only one that's being shared is:

IRQ 12 - SB Live! and some Intel PCI to USB Host Universal Host Controller

I also have DMA ticked for both HDs. Also tried relocating the NIC to a new slot (while keeping away from the one next to the AGP slot). Not many progs are running in the BG, and I always do spyware, etc. checks from time to time. Any help would be appreciated.

My PC:

PII - 300
128MB PC66 SDRAM
Hercules Prophet II MX 400
Maxtor 4GB UDMA33 HD
Fujitsu 13.6GB UDMA66 HD
Win98SE

Not sure if this is your problem or not ... but do you have "get automatic updates" active on your computer? May be that it is searching for things as you are on there. If this also happens when you are not online ... then this probably would not apply.

Just a thought ... :)

mwkirchner - Nopes, I have the 'automatically check for updates' thing unchecked (if that's what you're talkin about).

cy - Not really, this 'lag' thing can happen with only IE running... but also with Norton Personal Firewall and Anti-Virus running as well. I think I've tried different Firewall security-level settings before, but it made no difference.

I gave my daughter a 300 emachine a while back and it does the same thing. 300mhz just don't have the horsepower to run some of the web sites out there. I am refering to ones with lots of java. One thing you can do is run msconfig and kill what you don't need. Not sure if it will help but you can give it a try.

It may be that everything is being passed through both Norton AV and Firewall. Both programs are checking incoming. That has to cause a lag or two.
Try dialup LOL. What I would give for B/band. :D
