winXP stop error inaccessible boot device

KT7A-R
Duron 950 @ 950
128MB PC100
Gf2 GTS32mb
80GB WD 7200rpm partition using partition magic (i don't fully trust it yet) - see partition info below
20GB on raid primary channel as primary device
52x CDrom ide 1 primary
16x CD-RW ide 1 slave
3com 3c905
SB live
300w psu

Do you think the creative chipset sound card could be causing this?

80gb drive partition info. Before an upgrade, this computer used the 20GB drive as teh main drive and the 80GB as a storage drive. During the course of the upgrade, the 80GB partition on the 80GB drive was resized using partition magic to 70GB. Then a 10GB parition was put in the remaining empty space using partition magic and winxp was installed in this 10gb partition.

The comptuer was working fine for a few days but now its acting up with stop blue screen errors when the computer boots.

Any ideas?

Thanks

that PSU should be enough, but that's one thing to consider.

You didn't switch the IDE connections for the boot drive did you? For instance, if I try moving my boot drive off the controller card and onto the onboard IDE, I get the same error.

are you SURE that you installed the raid controller DRIVERS (had devices on here before sorry).

they are required.. had a similiar problem like this myself. also, is the cdroms connected to the raid channel? if not, get them off of their.

At this point, I am 90% sure that I've got a dead Maxtor D740X-6L hard drive on my hands.

I have another drive that I can use to run the computer with until I RMA the dead Maxtor drive but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to get files off of the dead Maxtor drive?

That last question may sound stupid but just saying dead is easier than saying not-sure-if-it-is-totally-dead, which is what I mean.

The hard drive makes loud clicks when the computer starts.

Calling YeOldeStoneCat. You have experience with dead Maxtor drives. Any advice in regards to rescuing data and/or RMA'ing?

Thanks in advance

yea, if it's clicking it's dead. i'd go ahead and rma it, call maxtor and tell them ur drive is clicking..they'll tell u where to send it..as for data recovery....good luck, you can send it off for data recovery but it'll cost $$ (lots of it prolly $150+) and i don't know if you'd get the drive back intact or at all..depends on the service i suppose (once it's opened, warranty is void, so i'd call maxtor first and ask if they offer something).

btw clicking is called a head crash..also can u be more specific about the clicking, is it continuous or just once (cause maxtors do click once when they park the heads on shut down, didn't think they did on power on tho..

There are about 4 or 5 loud clicks when the computer is first turned on and then there are a couple more when IDE devices are checked during POST.

The drive will be RMA'ed soon.

Damn, 80GB of files down the drain. Ouch. (the tears aren't mine, the drive belongs to a friend of mine)
