Quake Nightmare PING!...Help :(

Post by AmigA »

Please help or I go mad! :(

This is my set-up:
PC:
P133mhz 48Mb Voodoo3 16Mb pci
One isa ethernet card to 4ports hub
One pci ethernet card to Cable Modem
Windows98SE and ICS installed
1Gb Hd

Other computer:
Amiga 1200 060 60Mhz and PPC 266Mhz
130 Mb Ram Permedia2 3D card 8Mb
10Gb Hd
One pcmcia ethernet card to same 4ports hub
Amiga OS 3.9

The pc allows the Amiga to go online through ICS of Win98SE. Both machines ping each other no problem and I can have LAN matches of Quake with friends with Amiga hosting and pc connecting...very nice! ;)

Amiga surfs the net, sends receive emails and plays Quake1, Shogo M.A.D. and Heretic II very well indeed! Ping 45-100 depending on server.

Pc surfs the internet okish...not as fast as the Amiga but ok through Explorer 5.5, but try to download with Explorer and you better watch paint drying...so slow. With the Amiga 64Mb program takes under 11 minutes with pc it starts and after 1 minute it stops and nothing happens, actually Explorer says that it will take about...24 hours and a few minutes...uhm...

Emailing is ok.

Now we come to Quake1! On the pc original Quake (Q95) played online is frustrating, I get the phone socket icon (lag) every 40-50 seconds with ping jumping from 60-200.

With Proquake, proquake+, winquake and Glquake is a complete nightmare. It just connects to a server and the phone socket icon is there every 2 seconds with ping going from 80-700.

Unplayable! And sometimes I even get the error cl_parseservererror and connection fails.

This also happens when the Amiga is switched off.

I have tweaked all the settings in the registry following your advice, defragmented the hd, installed the latest patch from microsoft the vcp386 file or something like that. I emailed the authors of the Quakes but they say they can't help...bah! :(

What is going on?

Please help, or is it time that Amiga Inc. take over the world again with their brilliant OS? By the way check the new Amiga One motherboard coming out soon with OS4 if you need a real OS. :)

Sorry about the length of this message :)

Thanks
