Lobo RWIN help

Post by BrianMc »

Lobo, I trust your judgement on this and would like some input. I will try the numbers you give me and then leave it alone. I have a P3 500 w/ 192 megs of RAM, using Win 98. With the speed tests I have only managed to get to 15x faster than 56k. That's cool, but I would like to get closer to 50x which is what it is supposedly capable of under ideal conditions.
By the way, I am using PPOE to connect. and my modem should be capable of 1.5mbs.

For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut, click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: 31944 or 63888

Leave GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize blank
You do not have to show me but check analyzer here at SG to make sure RWIN is in, you will see number right after (RWIN) on analyzer
At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT each time you change value in adjuster or it will not work.Click on tools at top of IE, internet options, delete files and offline files (This is safe, temp files) and click on clear history after EVERY test Quick speed test here
Speedtest may open another browser, so check taskbar and close other one, no other programs should be running, No AIM, ICQ, Virus scanner, Firewall, nothing
1.) Make sure defrag has been run, defragmented files slow you down.
2. At top of IE, click on Tools, internet options, click on delete files and click on offline files (It's safe), click on clear history, yes
3.) Go to Start button, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup, Click OK (Safe)
4.) Run scandisk (Short version)
5.) Scandisk on XP?
Click on My Computer, select Drive that XP is on, RIGHT click on BLANK place, select properties, then tools at top tab, click check now, check box automattically fix system errors, click start.

Once you find fast number for you, you want to save it, on file at top of adjuster click on that, save custom settings, put RWIN size in as name and click on save, now if you ever want these settins back, click on file, open custom settings file, and click on RWIN number, then click on save to registry at bottom, and REBOOT, your done. How to do real dowwnload test on help thread below in signature. This is all I recommend, if anyone else jumps in with something else, good luck, but it did not come from me.
Blank boxes in adjuster just mean default values are being used.

SAVE SETTING's so we do not have to do this again, directions above, good luck.

If you are not from USA go to http://www.testmyspeed.com and select test site close to you

If that does not work EvilAjax can help you as he is on PPPoE

With a maximum throughput of 1.5mbps, you'll only see 30 times faster than 56k, not 50 :)

Try these RWINs with Tcp1323Opts set to 0 or just left blank.

29040, 30492, 31944 and 33396 for now. Let me know which RWIN gives you the most speed.

Also, try them with all other settings in the adjuster set to default (blank). It's how I have mine setup. Remember to backup your settings before choosing a new one. Good luck. :D

I just installed Windows XP. Which patch should I install and what additional settings should I try? Will I be using the same RWINs that you have listed above? Thanks.

Click on help thread below in signature and follow directions exactly, please leave your OS and system specs if you have not done so.Also if you have Cablenuts adjuster installed I need to know that. There are some Tips and how to do speed test on help thread. Thank you and good luck. Please do this AFTER you install patches:

Please click in my signature where it says Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.

I E-mailed this thread to EvilAjax as he is on PPPoE, 1480 is right as far as I know for MTU, you can use other RWIN's to speed you up till Evil gets here, I'm on cable :)

RWIN isn't suitable for your MSS. Try these in TcpWindowSize: 25920, 28800, 31680 and 40320
Leave everything else blank/default. Let me know if they're boosting your speed or not.

If these don't work, we'll try larger ones. :)

What are your caps again?
Try these with Tcp1323Opts set to 1.
63360, 69120, 72000, and 126720 :)

If that doesn't help, we're gonna have to get you RASPPPoE.

By the way, how much RAM do you have? What's speeds did you get BEFORE upgrading to Windows XP?

Since nothing is helping your speed, you're going to have to download RASPPPoE.
Download it from here http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/

Follow Windows 2000/XP instructions carefully. Delete your current connection.. you wont need to reboot once you've created your connection, because XP is the best :D

Also, if you haven't assigned your NIC an IP address and subnet mask yet, do so now.
Click Start > Run and type command. In DOS, type ipconfig and hit enter. This will show you your current IPs that your NIC and PPPoE adapters have. Only pay attention to your Ethernet Card Adapter, not to the PPP adapter. Next, right click My Network Places and select Properties from the drop down menu. This will open up the Network Connections window. In here, locate your Local Area Network connection and right click it, select Properties from the drop down menu. In the next Window that opens up, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties at the bottom. In the next window, click 'Use the following IP Address'. This is where that DOS window comes in handy. Copy the same exact IP Address from your Ethernet card (in the dos window) and place it where it says IP Address. Same goes for the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. If your Default Gateway is blank, then just leave it blank. Click Ok, then Ok again. In the DOS window type exit dos then enter. Reboot your machine.

Try these TcpWindowSizes with your new PPPoE software.
23232, 26136 29040, 40656, 47916, 52272

Take the TCP/IP Analyzer test just to make sure your MTU is set to 1492 and that you've successfully set each RWIN correctly.

By the way, you never answered my question. What were your speeds before upgrading to Windows XP and what are your advertised speeds? I see no point in trying to tweak more if you're already at your maximum capabilities.

Well, good luck!

I really hate it when people say something isn't working and doesn't explain how. What exactly isn't working? Do you get an error? Does this error occur while being connected or while connected. What does the error say? After rebooting, does the error still occur? Did you delete your other connection (XP PPPoE?)? Did you correctly set up RASPPPoE?

I wrote earlier what the problem was. It tells me that a device is already connected when I try to run RASPPOE. How do I get it to work again?

Did you create your connection like this?

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type RASPPPOE and click Ok. ('If you get an error, follow the advice it gives')
3. This will open up a window with Query available PPP over Ethernet Services through Adapter: at the top.
4. Make sure your Network Adapter is selected (the one you actually use. if it's grayed out, even better)
5. Click Create a Dial-up Connection for the selected Adapter.
6. After you've created the connection, click Exit.
7. On your desktop, there should be a dial-up connection named Connection through Adapter name. Same goes for your Network Connections window. (Right click My Network Places and select Properties. The connection should be under Dial-up)
8. Double click the connection and fill the in User Name and Password fields. (username@domain.com if just your username doesn't work)
9. Click Save password for Anyone who uses this computer.
10. Click Dial and you should connect in half a second.

Additional Properties
Double click your connection and click Properties. In General, uncheck Show icon.... In Options, all boxes should be unchecked except for Redial if line is dropped. Set it to Redial 99 times every 1 second and to never go on idle. Click Ok to save.
<sarcastic>um... yeah</sarcastic>

It tells me that it couldn't find an internet connection when I typed the command in. I can't seem to get to that point like I did last time.

My gonna say remove it, reboo then reinstall if that doesn't work reomstall your Ethernet card, with fresh drivers.

How to I uninstall RASPPPoE?

1) Double click on "My Computer"
2) Double click on "Dial-up Networking"
3) Delete the Dial-up icon used for your RASPPPoE connection
4) Delete the short cut for your RASPPPoE connection on your desktop
5) Right click "Network Neighborhood" ("My Network Places" in Windows ME) and choose "Properties"
6) Highlight the "PPP over Ethernet Protocol -> (Ethernet adapter name)" and click "Remove"
7) Click "OK"
8) Click "Yes" to reboot.

How do I install RASPPPoE on Windows '98, 98SE, and ME?

1) Uninstall any flavors of PPPoE (any other PPPoE software programs) installed on your system. Only after downloading the RASPPPoE program.

Note: You must also uninstall RASPPPoE if you have a previous version installed.

Get it here: RASPPPoE program.

2) Unzip the zipped RASPPPoE folder to a temp directory of your choice.
3) Right click on "Network Neighborhood" (in ME "My Network Places"). Choose "Properties".
4) Click "Add..."
5) Select "Protocol". Click "Add..."
6) Select "Have Disk". Select "Browse" Then choose the folder you unpacked the RASPPPoE programs to. Then select any one of the INF files, it does not matter which one.
7) Click "OK".
8) Then "OK" again.
9) In the "Select Network Protocol" window make sure "PPP over Ethernet Protocol" is highlighted and click "OK".
10) Click "OK" on "Network" window.
11) Click "Yes" to Reboot.
12) Delete the temp folder you unpacked RASPPPoE in to at the start.
13) Go to your "Start" menu, and then choose "Run". Type in RASPPPoE and click "OK"

Note: If you get an error message then follow the Windows prompts.

14) "RASPPPoE" window opens, if you have more then one Ethernet card make sure the card connected to your modem is selected. Screen shot
15) Choose "Create a Dial-Up Connection for the selected Adapter". Screen shot
16) Click Exit.

Note: If you do not see a Dial-Up short cut on your desk top then open "My Computer", then "Dial-Up Network", then delete the new Dial-Up Adapter (should be named "Connection through..."). Then start back at step 14.

17) Double click the Dial-Up short cut on your desk top.
18) Enter your userid as provided by your ISP.

Note: you may need to include your ISP's domain as part of your userid. Ex. For Verizon customers it would be userid@verizon.net.

19) Enter your password as provided by your ISP.
20) Click "Save Password"
21) Click "Connect".
22) Surf away!
