Trying to tweak my connection

Post by hditano »

Hello there.

I got Windows XP Sp2 (just reinstalled)...and 1024kbps/512kbps ADSL connection.
Modem: Speed Touch Home by Alcatel.
Router: Linksys WRT54G2
Country: Argentina

For some reason...before to wipe my Hard Drive...i was getting a latency of around 180/200ms on pretty much any mmorpg (WoW, Aion, etc) and FPS(BF2, CoD, etc).
Now and after reinstalling windows my latency got kinda high 250ms/300ms on any game.
I didn't install any Windows Patch or anything like that, and to be honest, my last Windows Installation has been on my PC for the past year so i cannot remember what i did at that time. (The only thing i did was to download the Registry fix for the limited connections from 10 to 50).

Heres the info. Thx in advance.

I just did this test using Dallas...since my WoW server is actually hosted at the Dallas Datacenter.

First thing after re-installing an OS is to download and update all the hotfixes, and firmware and drivers.

Firmwares/Drivers are updated.

I dont usually download hotfixes unless they are a must have. Never had any issue following this mentality till now.

If i start to download all the hotfixes...probably gonna migrate to SP3...which is something i dont really like.

Anyways...im gonna follow your advice and download all the hotfixes.

Ok....all hotfixes installed.
I should be ready to go now.

Should i change anything in particular on the TCP settings?

Btw...my router connects to my ISP via PPPoE. I already got MTU Size configured to 1492.

Note: If you use Cablenut with XP, you must leave a blank for DefaultReceiveWindow.

TCP Optimizer:
General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 63888
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - uncheck
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 10
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - blank
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - blank
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768

After reboot, post a new TCP Analyzer report.

Ping times seems normal. I do not see any spikes in the 300-400ms range.

Try some changes to ToS:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 63888
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - uncheck
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 10
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 80
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
