drive imaging software

Post by Faust »

..... and of course, i cant locate my frickin' Ghost 10 CD. my guess is i left it in the CD/DVD drive of a comp i've worked on.

so, this brings me to the question of Acronis. seems the latest flavors of Ghost are for backup, not imaging. so, in dumping Ghost as a solution at this point, and my only other title on-hand being PQ Drive Image 5, i need something that'll work in a modern context. any Acronis True Image users out there? is it a sound investment?

I didn't like it because at the time, it didn't seem to image Vista the way I wanted.

There is Clonezilla and DriveImage XML for free, though I have never used them.

Acronis would be a wise investment IMO. Does the trick for me when I use it.

Paragon Software
http://www.paragon-software.com/

Good stuff, I use their products on servers, much less expensive than Acronis.

thanks CD, Cat and giovanni. i downloaded Clonezilla and DriveImage XML (there's a BartPE plugin for that as well, which is :thumb: ). will give them a shot tomorrow. to be honest, im still in going to buy a title. its between Acronis and your suggestion, 'Cat. Paragon looks pretty nice. i need to do some more reading on their site.

also, along the same vein..... can either retail title (or any other that anybody knows of) create standalone system restore CD/DVDs? that's been something i've wated for years and years. the only ones ive seen in the past required the original app to perform the restore function, making it impractical (in essence every customer i did work for would have to buy a copy).

thanks again, fellas :)

looks like Paragon's Hard Disk Manager 2009 does what i was whining about in my last post. exactly to what degree the rescue CD/DVD is "standalone" remains to be seen. i d/l'd the trial yesterday, and will give it a whirl today. thx again 'Cat. looks like this one is the winner. will report on it after i try it out.

Cat, Do you know if this is compatible with vista? I know it says it is but I get an error when trying to install it as a trial.

Haven't used it on Vista myself yet, but seeing as their other products have worked problem free for me, and they state the latest version is Vista compatible, I'm guessing there's an issue with your system, or the download you got was...err..dunno, corrupted, or wrong one, or..dunno.

It appears it was corrupted. I tried it again and it loaded fine.

thx

I have Acronis and it worked well for me but this looks just as nice and their free version seems to rock. ;)

i'll second that (albeit without the firsthand with Acronis). i havent paid them for the licence yet, but i predict with a good amount of certianty i'll be gladly paying when the trial runs out. about 95% of "perfect" IMO.
