Routers

Post by Matt615 »

Ok, if you use a router, is there anything that wont work on the computers connected to it, ie.....software that use the internet(AOL, AOLIM, ICQ, NETMEETING, FRONTPAGE)...... Like for example will another computer be able to call me through netmeeting????

NetMeeting is a nightmare to use with any kind of router that is using NAT. There are other programs that do the same as NetMeeting, work just as well and work with NAT.

The problem with NetMeeting is that is alocates ports dynamically so you never know shat ports to forward. If you have DMZ option with your router, it may allow NetMeeting to work.

no, you forward the port to a specific computer like port 21 to 192.168.0.2, everything behind the router will have a lan ip, if you are going to have a computer outside the router you probably wont be able to recognize it as a part of the lan, you will find that being behind a router can cause a few problems, like napster file transfers over aim, updating half life servers, those are a few i have had problems with, i have a netgear router. To figure out how to setup the router with the port forwaring stuff you will most likely have to read the manual, or if you lost it like me call tech support.
