Best surge protector?

Post by BostonBull »

I am looking for info on the best Surge Protector, at a reasonable price.

Is it OK to run the Cable to my modem through this to help protect EVRYTHING?

I dont worry about the coax cable. APC make the best IMO.

I liek surge protectors that have room for the plugs witht eh fat ends on then so that you dont block 2 other plugs with one of the fat ones.

Is the APC an MOV protector or SM?

So what happens if lightnng strikes the house and the coax line is hit? The voltage can and will travel up the coax line into the comp and then backfeed into your house.

It'll travel to the modem and then I'll call up comcast and be like, "hey yo, your modem sucks, gimmie anoder one!" :D

I figure it should stop there, but I dunno.

I would assume I have a MOV one then, not a big deal I dont think, plus im also behind an APC SmartUPS.

I was concerned with power surges from the line, not lightning strikes.

I am concerned with both. I have a big $$$ TV and entertainment set-up and a whole office worth of stuff. I am going to have to spend the 200 and get a decent SM protector. I dont want to elave all this stuff to chance behind a MOV. There are other things that can happen also besides lightning. What if a car strikes a pole a few blocks away. A primary wire comes down and into contact with phone or cable and sends 1000's of volts screaming through the line? An MOV is designed to send that voltage to ground.....YOUR HOUSE GROUND, thus it will back feed through the neutral in the home and wipe all things electrical out.

Not a problem I guess if you have homeonwers contents insurance.
