Win2000 start up question

Post by mikemean »

Ok, you know how in win 98 or me you can go to the run menu and type msconfig to get to the menu where it tells you what things are starting up so you can disable them? How do you do that in Win2000? There are things starting up when the computer is starting up and it is really slowing down the start up. So what I want is the equivilent of msconfig for Win2k. Thanks

Ok, I tried going to the administrative tools, and then selecting services, but that did not show any programs. I am trying to get some programs to not startup when windows starts.

2000 doesn't have a nice utility to check what applications will run at startup. You need to check manually. First place to look is in the Startup section of the Start Menu, both for the currently logged in user and for all users. Open explorer, and go to the directory System Drive:\Documents and Settings\current user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, where current user is the username you are logged in under. In there is a list of some of the programs that will run at startup. Also check the directory System Drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. Remove any applications you don't want to start. You may want to move them rather than just deleting them in case you want to put them back.

The other place applications may be set to start is in the registry. Run regedit and look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This contains applications that will startup with the current user. Delete any entries that you don't want to start. Also check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This contains applications that will startup with all users. Again, delete entries that you don't want. You may wish to make a new key, such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-Disabled and move the entries there rather than deleting them in case you wish to restore them later. CAUTION: backup your registry before you start mucking with it, because you could do some serious damage...

I still like X-Setup from www.xteq.com for disabling or deleting items from W2K's startup menu.

Sorry about stealing the answer. I would also suggest he stick with the older version and NOT the beta as I think using the WIZARDS in the older verison is a lot easier the first time around - the beta might couase problems.
