My ISP is Clix and my connection is supposedly adsl2+ 24576 kbps (download) 400 kbps (upload).

What should I do first?
change the mtu for with cablenut mtu tool ? to 1492 or 1480?
run the tcp optimizer ? with which config?

Use the following with TCP Optimizer to first try increase your MTU:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - leave blank
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - uncheck
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 80
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0

just one thing, on top on the general settings tab, it's default ticked in cable modem, should I leave this like that or should change it to dsl or dsl ppoe?

Enter the value 1500. Do not click the small box for MTU PPPoE. You want the comp to search for its own highest MTU setting.

If your OS is XP SP2, do not use Cablenut.

I connect without a user name and password in windows it's always on but there are PPPoE login details in the router

You will have to input the details of VPI and VCI as instructed by your ISP. Mine is VPI - 0 and VCI - 100. Yours may be different.

If you were to check mail through your ISP's website rather than to use Outlook Express or similar (example if you were travelling), you will need to input a username and password to access the mailbox. Use the same username and password as login details in the router setup.

Do the TCP Analyzer and post the results. We can then see if you are having trouble in some fields.

If your ISP specified VCI to be 35 then that should be the value used. This value would be displayed and adjustable under ATM VC and WAN settings.

Do a tracert to http://www.yahoo.com and post.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cusor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

These are settings in your router web admin. But from your speedtests I would say they are already correctly set.

Your tracert looks good. No problems at hop 1 and 2.

It is now early morning in Lisbon, and thus ping time to the US is quite low at 132ms. Do the tracert again in the evening at about 9-10pm and see if the ping time climbs to 200+ms.

If ping times goes above 200ms keep your present RWIN setting.

If your ping time remains below 150ms use the following setting with TCP Optimizer:

I was just checking vci in wan settings and aldo in the analyzer says the mtu is 1452
in the router under IP Interface Parameter

is MTU with value 1492

what should I try now?

Your MTU at the router may be set to 1492, but your ISP may be limiting MTU to 1452. We follow your MTU as reported in the TCP Analyzer as that is your actual MTU when connected to the internet.

The choice of TCP Receive Window (RWIN) to use depends on where you frequently surf to. If it is to the US, you should make an allowance for max. latency to the US. This will be the latency during busy internet traffic, which for most countries, are during 7pm to midnight. So the peak time will be 9-10pm, and that is when you should do your next tracert.

RWIN is calculated by a formula

RWIN = Bandwidth x max latency divided by 8

Max Latency = ping time x 1.6 ( or ping time under normal data transfer load)

Your peak speed seems to be almost 10 mbps.

So if RWIN = 519616, max latency will be almost 400ms (or ping time of about 220-250ms).

what do you think is this ok?

I mostly use for downloads in directconnect network with a multipart client
I already forward ports in the router both tcp and udp I can get up to 1.59 M
and the connection is supposedly 24576 kbps (download) 400 kbps (upload).

is there anything else I can do to speed up?

Your max speed in a ADSL service depends on your distance to your ISP's central switch office. Here is a graph to explain:

As you can see, Speed starts to fall rather fast with distance for ADSL2+ for the top part of the service 24-8 mbps.

As for RWIN setting, I would recommend you keep it at 519616 to cover latency during peak times as well.
