Slow Speeds When Using Router

Post by syscon »

I have having a problem with a Belkin f5d5231-4 4 port router, I am on 10mb cable and if I connect my cable modem to my pc I get speeds of up to 9.2Mbps as soon as I introduce the router the speed drops to anywhere between 4.5 & 5.5Mbps.

No other computers connected at the minute (router was setup ready for Xmas as my son is getting pc). My computer is connected at 100Mbps according to the indicator light on the router / PC & the router is connected to the cable modem at 100Mbps.

I have read a few articles on this site and one asked for tracert & TCP analyser so I have done this and results are pasted below:

DL the optimizer and choose optimal settings and set it 10,000kbps.

Syscon,

Two days ago I upgraded my road runner internet service to the 10mbps package. I am having the same issue that you are with the same exact router. If you find a solution, please post it here and I will do the same if I'm lucky enough to find one. Thanks.

Router throughput

I find the same issues. I have Comcast HSI 6000/768 with Powerboost that will surge to 18000/768 (verified at 17989/701 by test at speakeasy.net/speedtest) but only when a PC is connected directly to the SB5101 cable modem. I have tried three different routers and I know that two of them (a Webramp 700s and a Linksys BEFW11S4) limit me to under 10000/768 because of the 10 T base WAN port. The other I have is a Network Everywhere badged Linksys NR041 it has a 10/100 WAN and (4) 10/100 LAN ports but it appears it's LAN to WAN throughput is limiting me to under 10000/768.

If I use ICS to share through a hub, all connected get the 18000/768 speeds but I want a hardware firewall with the ability to block websites by URL like my Webramp did. I amy also desire wirless in the future. There seems to be limited information available as to what a router's WAN to LAN specs are. Anyone have some insight as to what routers can handle the Powerboost speeds?

Thanks for the info provided in https://www.speedguide.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=214059

WOW.... I am having the same problem on Comcast HSI.

I have an WRV54G Rev. 02 Wireless VPN Router and I am using am Linksys BEFCMU10 Rev. 4 Cable Modem. I have had numerous problems since comcast has introduced the powerboost feature into service.

What is happening is I am paying for the 8.8MB download/768k Upload and when I am connected directly to my cable modem I get my bandwidth about 95% what I am paying for. When I connect my router to my cable modem and my computer into the router, I can 1.2 to 2.8mb downloads on speed tests. I have used TCP Optimizer with no luck and it hasnt helped me.

Here is the kink in all this. For giggles I ordered Embarq/Sprint DSL and had it installed. They sent me an ZyXEL 660R DSL Modem and I install it and using my static IP Address I added I get the full 5.0mb download I am paying for with DSL. GO back to Cable modem, and I get only 1.2 to 2.8 again if I am lucky. I mean what the HE$#. I have called linksys time after time, chat session after live chat session and its still happening and they want to point fingers at everyone else. Is it an configuration file problem from Comcast when they backdoor the modem?

Here are my current levels on my modem:

Status Comment
Acquire Downstream Channel 711000000 Hz Locked
Connectivity State Operational Operational
Boot State OK Operational
Security Enabled BPI+

Downstream Channel

Lock Status Operational
Modulation 256QAM
Channel ID 0
Provisioned Rate 8800 kbps
Symbol Rate 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Power -2.0 dBmV

Upstream Channel

Lock Status Operational
Modulation 16QAM
Channel ID 1
Provisioned Rate 768 kbps
Symbol Rate 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream Power 47.0 dBmV

Assuming you've tried the latest firmware on the wrv? Try setting MTU manually to 1500. Matter of fact, just to clear it up..perform a factory reset.

Another note...the wrv54g line wasn't particularly well liked...I've read a lot of complaints about that particular model.

Need REAL solution. ANYBODY ?

Is there ANYONE that does know how to configure these routers to stop choking the bandwidth ?
Yes, Folkks, I'm having the same problem as the rest of you !
1...Netgear will not talk to me cuz the RP114 is EOL and 3 years old.
2...Optimum Cable claims no knowledge cuz they didn't supply the RP114.
3...TCP optimizer is in use here: MTU=1500, DHCP is working as is TCP/IP,
ping and traceroute results say it is the router. Period.
4...All content filtering is off, watchdog is off
5...Port linking does NOT make any difference
6...I need the router for a network printer and when my kid is home from college with his computer.
Without RP114 bandwidth=12.9-14mbps,
(I guess I'm not close enough to the ADA to get 15mbps?)
With RP114 bandwidth=5.7-6.0mbps.

Yes, did a hardware reset.
Yes, I have loaded the latest firmware.
Yes, all software firewall off/unloaded (zonealarm, webwasher)

ANYONE have a REAL reason why these routers seem to be the problem and what we can do about it ?
Please do NOT reply if all you have is what to try to fix either us or our computers and their software. Please keep in mind that it is CLEARLY the routers and the failure of their manufacturers to provide REAL tech support.

Keep in mind that this problem DOES NOT EXIST or is not detectable with DSL, possibly because DSL (Verizon) max=3mbps

The RP114 does provide a 100mbps link led for the uplink (modem) port.
Is it just for looks ? :irate:

I had the same problem with my RP114.Basically,it was a good little router in its day but old technology.I replaced it with a D-Link DGL4100 and my thru put went up about thirty percent.
