Gonna guess you're using Jet Direct? Plugs into network via RJ-45?

Several ways of doing it...different versions of Jet Admin out there, software that should come on the CD with the printer to let you configure it, etc.

What I do is manually program the IP of the printer to something within the IP range of your network, but outside the DHCP scope. Then add it through Win2K or XP via TCP printer.

But they usually ship software with it, or you can also download that software from HP's site, with "wizards"...etc that will configure it for you, scan for unconfigured printers on your network via MAC, run through all the stuff.

you have to be logged in to the computer hosting the printer before it will see it...

either create a user with your comps Username/pass on the other comp or go to workgroup and log in with whatever user you were supplied with.

Generally, you don't even need the JetAdmin software anymore. You can't even find it on HP's site- only the network printer wizards. But that's OK, 'cause you don't need it!

You can attach to an HP JetDirect 170 or 300, as well as most later model internals (4050 should be OK- 4-5 yrs old?) via HTTP and a Java applet. If you have the IP address of your printer, connect with a browser. There you can configure it for protocols, IP's etc. , everything that JetAdmin software used to do. It looks like this:

and other screens:

and more
Observe everything...focus on nothing..

Program the IP on the printer to what you want it to be...else by default it will "obtain IP automatically" from a DHCP service...which IMHO is not the ideal way. I prefer to assign them static IP's outside the DHCP of your network.

HPs replacement for JetAdmin, called WebAdmin, is available for download from their website. I'm not that fond of it though...

port name is arbitrary, i ususally just use the default which is IP_192.168.xxx.xxx or whatever your printers IP is.
