That's strange, never heard of that happening before... Only thing I could tell you would be to remove Internet Explorer from the windows components and reinstall it. By removing it, that won't get rid of everything for IE but hopefully it's enough to fix her problem.

may resort to that , but gonna let her get the rest of the sp's and updates in first.
then if she doesnt have it, we'll try that. I hoped Windows update would help her, but so far .... noooooo.

got her converted to ntfs.... she didnt have a way of saving her files , so she just did the update to XP.
now to get her past this issue. funny thing is , she updated to Norton 2004 AV, when this happend . She suddenly couldnt get a a few web sites she usually visits. all work for me. but we were gonna check her security , and discovered she didnt have that tab in her internet options..... really strange.
She has now dumped the Nortons, and runs AVG instead. I am going to have her run a trojan scan next... then try the uninstall /reinstall IE6.

Just wondering, about the updates... Which update did she do first? ALWaYS do the service packs first, beleive me you'll run into serious problems if you don't and try to install current updates first.

and the worm turned again... she wasnt looking at the desktop , right. ( not sure what she saw, but it still isnt there ) , so I will have her do a full reinstall ( of XP ). She did the reinstall of IE, but that didnt fix the tab being gone.
I didnt see anything at M$ about that, but alot that sounded like a similar problem, she says she remembers it from W98 , but after the upgrade to XP, and then discovering where the AVG she had installed, had an major error , too. So it got complicated , fast. and after a reinstall of the AVG, it still doesnt have the icon in the tray.
it seems to be another energiser bunny effect..... on and on and on....

Ok, I sent her a couple of links to online scans, one for Swat it, and hope it finds something... this doesnt make sense that her AV and the security tab both had problems. Unless she got hit with a trojan , or worm. I really want to get her repaired. She is into Dog rescue , and needs to get to the one site it wont let her get to. ( maybe the fleas did an uprising ?) hahaha.....( small pun )

Oh, Norton also has a free online scan if you think that may be of help.

A copy and paste from an email tonight,....

"This is incredible. It's all back! However, there's still no security tab where it's supposed to be. The very last download I did was that Java that you sent. I hadn't tried it since then(I was rebooting and trying the website after each download) and I just tried it now, and got in. I can go in with both Mozilla and IE! Some of the colors are different from what they were, which is what makes me think that java did it. But there was also nowhere in all the options, etc. to enable javascript like there was in Windows 98, although I had it enabled there and couldn't get in."

this is strange, and will end up right when all is done. I sent her the floppy disc program, so she can make her set up's , and she'll do a wipe ( with KILLDISK ) and full install next.
But I thank you Qball for the interest. I am grateful this site is here.
Folding away for Team 15. ( ralphnrose )
