I have the tcp/ip optimizer should i use that and what should i use under x-setup. under tcp optimizer do i choose dial up, cable, dsl, dsl pppoe, or extreme and what should i change under custom settings.

this is ridicoulous my ping is lower on my dial up then sattellite and i live out in a country part of michigan called imlay city.
direcpc is the only kind of good internet they got. we only got dial up or buissness dsl for $130 bucks a month or some T1 but all to expenseive.

thats about all i know if you need more info let me know and using x-setup or cable nut is there a way to back up your stuff because i dont want my internet to get any worse. Thanks

Besides my DSL connection, I also have DirecPC. Your ping times aren't going to get any better, since it's a satellite connection, latency will be terrible.

It's the whole reason I got a DSL connection.

Hi opmharley :D sorry to say but ViciousX is right, latency is the biggest issue with satellite. There are a few things that might help, first you need to rais your MTU, if you are using XP's native PPPoE setup it should be 1480. Try the following fix from Bob C:

1) Download this file http://www.carricksolutions.com/XP_MTU.reg
2) Right click the file and choose "Merge"
3) Click "Yes"
4) Go to "Start" -> Click on "Run" -> Type in "Regedt32.exe" -> Click "OK"
5) Go to this Reg Key "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\NdisWan\ Parameters\Protocols\0]"
6) Double click on "Protocol MTU"
7) Click on "Decimal" -> Enter your desired value (I.E.: Anything less then 1480.) Use hexidecimal value 5c8 (which is 1480).
8) Click "OK"
9) Done!

Once you do that please post another TCP/IP Analyzer test and we will see if we can improve on other things.

OK try using the TCPOptimizer, download it from my signature and use the following settings;

Settings tab:

select - DSL PPPoE
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1480
TTL - 128
TCP Receive Window - 63360
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 3
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

Also how are you connecting your modem to your pc, USB or ethernet?

im connecting using a usb port and i havent power cycled my modem and it runs forever also under tcp/ip optimizer everything was changed fine except under other settings max connections per server was changed to 15 and max connections per 1.0 server was also changed to 15.

my stuff is still the same under this test is there any other i should try?

OK connecting via USB is most likely one of the reasons for such bad latency, you need to buy an ethernet card and connect that way.

It may be easier to fix your MTU if you have an ethernet card, you could then choose it under your adapters with the TCPOptimizer. As far as an ethernet card, you just need the card and a CAT5 cable to connect it from your modem to your pc. And yes your downloads will be faster.

That will work fine, just get a CAT5 cable (looks like a large phone cable) and you should see an ethernet port on your modem, plug one end into it and the other into your card. Only use ethernet, DO NOT use both, you may have to reset your modem and reboot your pc for it to work properly.

i reinstalled windows xp i got home now and here is my stuff

TCP options string = 020405b4
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535

Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

so what do i change now

opmharley- Go to mydirecway.com and sign up if you havent already... Go to downloads and get the latest version of the direcway (direcpc's new name) software and that will help latency just a little. Our office system runs about 900ms. The modems are dependent on the software. dont expect much from your upload and you wont be disapointed :)

they appear to be the same

TCP options string = 020405b4

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

but somehow i can get over 800kbs on tests almost every time. i hope direcpc dont think im uncapping my modem most they said 200 to 400 is normal.

speed from dsl reports

sorry about all the white i just used paint dont know how to get rid of it.

man direcpc said 200 to 400 is normal and i got 1600! thanks, id still be running at 350 if u didnt help. those people from customer support are dumb they said 350kbps was very good. and said nothing would happen if i tweaked it.

can I get in trouble for it running that high can i? Thanks

No you wont get in trouble. The speeds are controlled by direcway. They will however, slow you down (FAP you (fair Access Policy)) if you go over a certain amount of useage in a month. Read the Fair Access Policy to find out what this is as I dont remember...
