I am totally serious here. Ads piss me off, and annoying ones even moreso. Frankly, I never click on them. Let's make this a win-win situation. Let me give a donation, and you remove the ads for paying members. Everybody's happy then. Well, I'm happy anyway.

Anyone else think the way I do, or am I alone and about to be ridiculed and banned :p

No ridiculing allowed.... ;)

Banning is another matter...
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.

How would you go about ads not showing up for specific users? I personally do not mind the ads and I never get any popups since I use Ad Muncher.

Free for you + ads
Cheap for me - ads

We both win-- see how this works?

I guess the word "cheap" is relative.

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

Honestly though, what's the problem with the ads?

The simple banner gif takes a few k out of your MASSIVE INTERNET CONNECTION, and is completely unobtrusive. Giant flash ads that take up the whole screen and make noise are obviously a completely different matter, but SG really hasn't had a problem with those.

I'm just somewhat missing why people have a problem with ads COMPLETELY, and not just those who abuse them.

i dont mind the crucial adds. since the new sg layout i did notice that when you hover over forums links at the top of the page the links appear behind the add and i have to refresh to properly navigate.

I work on a SLOW computer at work. every bit of graphics that can be eliminated would be nice. I'd like to dump the nav bar too, but I'll start with the most likely to be removed in a paid SG. A custom interface that I could trim to the bare essentials would be the ultimate solution, but ya gotta start somewhere.

some ads do take up teh screen, adn some expand, and cover the menu. it can be annoying, if there was an adfree choice i'd pay for it. dont care about the bandwith.

The problem with creating an ad free version of speedguide is that it can already be done fairly easily for free. So, what incentive is there for anyone to want to pay for something when it can be done legally and for free, with a simple hostsfile, other than perhaps some loyalty to the site? The only way it would ever work if it was bundled in some sort of package say for $10 a month you got an @speedguide.net email address 10or so Megs of Webspace, no adds, and perhaps a few more perks. Even still what is the point of no adds with this deal? Phillip would have to be a complete idiot to throw that into the deal. He'd be throwing away a source of income. All in all I think that an ad free version of speedguide is a waste of time and not a very smart business decision.
Respect it.

I'd pay a monthly fee for a @speedguide email and a few megs of storage, for pics and vids and such. Really, the @speedguide email would be great, I'd cough up some dough JUST for that. Ya listening Philip?

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 does a perfect job at getting rid of both the banners and pop-ups :) plus, you get the extra firewall protection, of course.

Because some of the ad banners across the top cover up the menus sometimes which is very annoying. Id gladly pay a small fee.

I understand that, and that's definately a bug (usually refreshing the page will show a different ad and will let it work). I was referring more to people's aversion towards ads as a whole, even if they are all that's supporting a site that they go to.

I have no problem with paying a fee. In fact, I still wonder why almost as many people have a problem with a fee-supported site as they do with an ad-supported one. :p

Qwijib0, very good point, we're actually in the planning stages of implementing something similar. Ultimately, we'd offer an optional small picture hosting space (web based, no other file types) + ad free site + more complete security scan for another paid level of membership. It might take some time to implement since development is not trivial (payment processing, security, etc.).

There are some technical problems with allowing SG email addresses, such as spam relaying that might make it impossible at this time.

Either way, it's going to be a while before any of those are implemented, and the current level of service is always going to be free, for those that might be concerned :)

Just for the record: Ad blockers reduce site revenue... Most of the sites out there are ad-supported, and they would not exist without ads (bandwidth/hosting/servers cost money - message: ads are crucial to site survival). :D
Disclaimer: Please use caution when opening messages, my grasp on reality may have shaken loose during transmission (going on rusty memory circuits), even though my tin foil hat is regularly audited for potential supply chain tampering. I also eat whatever crayons are put in front of me.
