Gaming experience...

Post by Salem07 »

After following each and every advice i've found here, i ended up with very stable download/upload speeds (2.8/114 for a 3/128 rated DSL connection).

However,i seem to be a tad slower than my friends when it comes to online games, which have similar ping times to the same server(about 30-35,no packet loss) and lower end connections (1 Mb/128 kb and 512/128 cable conns).

So,how could i tweak my connection for pure online gaming, regardless of the effects those tweaks could have on my up/download speeds ?

ADSL PPPoA
ISP: Skynet
3Mb/128 Kb
Windows 98

Internet explorer 6

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

Lower MTU ? Lower DefaultRcvWindow ?

Any suggestion welcome.

Thank you ;)

Pretty much nothing you can do, latency is pretty much an ISP issue. The main 2 things that can effect it that are in your control are a good quality NIC and setting your NIC duplex mode properly.

my be you find usefull

PS reduction of MTU value is known in Europe since 2002/2003 urban myths.
OTOH you can experiment with above hehehe

MTU & RWIN are princypial values in TCP/IP settings
above settings are base for negotioation with servers
about requested transfer (data flow - compare to flow by pipe)

OTOH if you want to declare that your PC can swollow less data
you have right to do it
but your transfer will be reduced.

IMVHO reasons to reduce MTU or & RWIN willbe
huge packet lost
huge retransmisions
