Technicolor / Thomson TCW770

details: DOCSIS / EuroDOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Gateway
hardware type: Cable Gateway
date added: 2010-05-12
updated: 2015-06-25
The TCW770 is a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant wireless cable gateway. With this new generation of High Speed Data Services Solution, Thomson introduces up to eight (8) bonded downstream channels and four (4) bonded upstream channels, with a design backward compatible for use as a single-channel with DOCSIS and Euro-DOCSIS 2.0 (and older) networks without any service interruption. Thanks to the integrated dual split tuner solution, the operator will benefit from flexibility in channel allocation: to ease the management when the channel frequency plan is loaded or to separate data from other services such as video over IP.

The TCW770 has a Wi-Fi 802.11n draft 2.0 wireless interface, offering speeds of up to 150 Mbps. It also supports IPv4 and IPv6 and provides MPEG2 over IP Encapsulation.

Works poorly as a router. Breaking internet connection when IP-flood detection is enabled. Problems with NAT. There's a conflict how the modem handles DNS forwarding for DHCP clients. For some reason the modem forwards the ISP's DNS IP-address directly to the clients when the modem has internet connection instead of using the modems own LAN IP. When he modem has no internet connection, DNS IP-address is the modems own LAN IP. This causes DNS errors when the client is connected to the router before the router has established internet connection. In other words, first boot up the modem. Wait for internet connection and then boot up the computer. If this is done the other way, the client gets the wrong DNS IP and internet connection can only be restored by IPconfig/release - renew.

I agree. It's a horrific router. Not fit for purpose. When I tried to open more than 1 browser tab things would grind to a halt. I have deactivated its wireless, put it into modem-only mode, and connected it to a proper DD-WRT router. Now my internet connection works flawlessly :)

how do you put this thing in modem only mode?

horrible inconsistent connection, and it freezes up when i open more than 3-4 tabs in my browser at once. the router also gives me high ms and ping on games, which is pretty unacceptable for a gamer like myself.
