This model has gone "flakey" on me several times: not allowing me to connect to the net; requiring power cycles to function; etc. Today it appears to have died all together. Power cycles and reset buttons not withstanding, it fails to pass bits from my cable modem to my PC. I can almost log into the router to check it's configuration, but the default username and password (which it should revert to after resetting the unit) do not allow entery. If I were you, I would buy another router.

I had exactly this failure. My router stopped communicating with my cable modem. I could connect to the wireless function with my laptop, but I could not get to the outside world. Numerous resets later, I pitched the thing. I 'm now using Linksys. This is the 2nd Netgear router that has failed like this in a year.

Unlike the other users commenting, I have had no problems. I take that back, once there was a disconnect that took half a day to fix but part of it was due to a Linksys cable modem and my ISP all going weird at once so I never figured out which connection started the problem. I did run into a security issue with someone tapping into the connection and stealing bandwidth. But there are plenty of options to secure the unit, so locking up access was easy and quick. It will allow you to limit the amount Of IP's it serves in DHCP mode so I just allowed it to serve 3. One for the always on desktop, one for the always on Wii and one for the wireless card in a laptop. additionally it's set to only allow the MAC addresses from those machines. Now if I could only figure a way around Comcast's upload cap...

I have had no problems with this router has locked up only once or twice but other than that it has been wonderful.

I've had the same lock up requiring a power cycle as others have. It only happens when looking at aireal photo imagery on Google maps or real estate viewing software... I think it just tries to transfer too much data at one time and so it locks up. A power cycle always fixes it, but it only lasts about 20 minutes of viewing before it locks up again... and it gets really warm. Other than that, it's been a great router... good range, easy install, lots of functions... I just wish it would keep working without requiring a power cycle.

Hi
I have just recieved my router from my isp, and have had nothing but problem, it freezes my internet connection, and ports are closed for most programs, My router has 192.168.1.1 which is not default so I contacted isp for user/pass as defaults don't work, they could not help me, so I have a router than I can do nothing with, what a waste of time, do your self a favour buy another router.

Had the same problem of not being able to get into the administration till i realised on the underneath of the router that some companies have already changed the password and it is found here.

I've had nothing but constantly good performance with this router. No problems, easy to manage.

Been using my Netgear WGR614v9 for over a year now. Works great. Switched after the second Linksys died. But another poster said he switched after his second Netgear died. Meh, anecdotal evidence on a small scale doesn't help anyone much.

The Netgear setup was very fast for me and easy to use. I'd personally argue that it was a bit better than my Linksys experience, but they're both competitive and they try to please their customers. This one is just the same old wireless router equipped with everything we've come to expect; works well for most people.

Can we add QOS to this router?
by anonymous - 2009.09.02 19:39
Disable Advanced 108Mbps features. The router seems to choke while compressing aerial images

This router has been giving me fits. For the longest time, Comcast was providing me with a Static IP address (which I did not pay for). My IP address stayed the same for 3.5 years. Yesterday, I was having all sorts of problems getting my Comcast modem to talk to my router. At the same time, I also noticed that my IP address had changed. After 30 min. of power cycling both the router and modem, it finally began working again. This morning, same thing. IP address changed overnight and modem and router were not communicating. Is there a setting I need to change inside the router so that it doesn't lock up every time my WAN IP address changes? I'm assuming that this is what is causing the freezing up.

I got one of these when my ZyXEL X-550 finally died after years of dignified service. Luck-of-the-box gave me the v7. It's decent, and a nice performer, but it has weird quirks. This is the only router I've used that supports port forwarding but doesn't allow you to switch from port X external to port Y internal. So, for example, where I previously had a web server on port 80 of each of two machines that I just forwarded 8180 to 80 on server A and 8280 to 80 on server B, I now have to run each server on a different port internally as well. Also, it only supports a contiguous block of 50 assigned DHCP addresses. We have several laptops with both wired and wireless potential connections. With my previous router, I had a nice scheme where xx0+ would be wired connections and xx5+ would be wireless connections for the same device, and I had to change that.
