slower ftp downloads using xp?

Post by configure »

i am at my wits end here.. ;)
i have 2 machines; first one is a notebook running win98
when using ftpprograms i get a downloadspeed of ~90 k/sec
the other machine is my desktop; running winxp.
the problem is that when using ftpprograms on the desktop i get a downloadspeed of ~75 k/sec.
My browsing is excellent and i have optimized both machines using
the optimizer program at http://www.speedguide.net

NIC only on each machine. No USB right?

according to the test at http://bos.speakeasy.net/;

Speakeasy Speed Test
Test running..........
** Speed 606(down)/123(up) kbps **

which is close to what i pay for (chello maestro sweden)

but when i download from this ftp i am using i get tops 75 k/sec
on the xp, over 90 k/sec on the notebook

My setup:
cablemodem surfboard SB3100 connecing to a netgear fs 105
switch.
FE574B-3Com Megahertz 10/100 LAN PC on my notebook
Netgear FA311 10/100Mbit on the desktop

seems weird that the notebook downloads faster

Configure, that speed test you took is in the US and will be unreliable. Try here and choose a location that is closest to you.

http://www.testmyspeed.com/

Also take the SG TCP/Ip Analizer test here http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/ then copy and paste the resulte here in a reply to this thread. Please X out your IP address.

OUCH!! Made a speed test here in sweden and only got 555 kb/sec! I am paying for 624 down 128 up...

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = XXX.XX.XXX.XXX ()
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Q312461)

TCP options string = 020405b4

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 112 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

The one thing I can see right off the bat is to change SackOpts=1. This will turn on Selective Acknowledgements

Your speed really isn't that bad. It 89% of your cap.

Thanks! I've changed SackOpts=1

It is so weird this ftp thingie
flashfxp loads the ftp so slow on my desktop and i can never get more than 75 k/sec

On my dell notebook it loads real fast and i get 90 k/sec

Well i guess the speed of my old Dell Latitude must be something extra then!
or can it be my local network?
