The answer on wether to upgrade or not is up to you and your budget, and your computing needs.
Many of us hardcore gaming enthusiasts ///have/// to have the latest and greatest every year, or more. But others who just have basic computing needs, word processing, light gaming, internet, etc....there is no need to upgrade.
If your system cannot do, or does it poorly, whatever you do, and if you have the budget, then yes, I'd say upgrade.
Or does it do it "OK", but you'd like just a bit more...perhaps just stuffing more RAM in there will perk up your system. Or if you're into gaming, but not the latest, most system intensive games, then just upgrading your old video card may be enough.
As to the AMD XP vs the latest P4's, pretty close performance wise, again, up to your budget. If you upgrade CPU, then you'll need a new mobo, and most likely need new RAM also, and a new HSF, and most likely a new power supply...so there's 4/5 things that will be mandatory to upgrade if you select that path.

Yeah the later P4's (northwoods) are great, and their price has come down a lot. Cool running, lots of overclocking potential, and great chipsets to support it. Best bang for the buck chipset in my opinion is the 845-E (DDR based RAM, so affordable). The 850 is RDRAM (RIMM RAM...LOL)...so expensive to stuff RAM in there.Originally posted by Chillinhh

If I were to build a rig today, I'd choose the Asus P4B533 i845-E

good call yeolde
amd is a very stable processor...theyre not expensive at all...go with a P4 if you got some money to blow though

Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 512DDR Kingmax RAM, Intel D845PEBT2 Motherboard, Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer, 3Com 3C905CX-TXNM NIC, Radeon 8500 64MB DDR, Lite-On DVD-ROM, Plextor Plexwriter 40/12/40A CDRW, Antec 430W TruePower PSU, Two Western Digital 100GB 8MB Cache HD's.
very well put above, i like amds better, mainly for gaming purposes, but if u have the money go for a p4, id get it with ddr though not rdram.

Epox 8RDA+|2500+ Barton|1gb Corsair XMS (PC3200)|Total HD Space: 420 Gig|OS: Windows XP Corp|AGP: Radeon 9800 pro 128mb|LiteOn CDRW(48x);DVD(8x)|Klipsh Pro-Media 4.1 Speakers
I would go with a 1.8a. it costs about $170 and will run stable at 2.4 ghz with no extra cooling needs or special knowledge of overclocking. Dont get sucked into the high cost of the p4b's that come default with the 533 fsb. the 400 fsb p4a's will o/c to those speeds and well beyond for a fraction of the cost.
