Yep, but in here i'm probally the only one that will say that. Lot of AMD fans. Do some research and the better shall appear. Can't OC but then again you don't have OC a P4 :D :D

The answer on wether to upgrade or not is up to you and your budget, and your computing needs.

Many of us hardcore gaming enthusiasts ///have/// to have the latest and greatest every year, or more. But others who just have basic computing needs, word processing, light gaming, internet, etc....there is no need to upgrade.

If your system cannot do, or does it poorly, whatever you do, and if you have the budget, then yes, I'd say upgrade.

Or does it do it "OK", but you'd like just a bit more...perhaps just stuffing more RAM in there will perk up your system. Or if you're into gaming, but not the latest, most system intensive games, then just upgrading your old video card may be enough.

As to the AMD XP vs the latest P4's, pretty close performance wise, again, up to your budget. If you upgrade CPU, then you'll need a new mobo, and most likely need new RAM also, and a new HSF, and most likely a new power supply...so there's 4/5 things that will be mandatory to upgrade if you select that path.

Yeah the later P4's (northwoods) are great, and their price has come down a lot. Cool running, lots of overclocking potential, and great chipsets to support it. Best bang for the buck chipset in my opinion is the 845-E (DDR based RAM, so affordable). The 850 is RDRAM (RIMM RAM...LOL)...so expensive to stuff RAM in there.

If I were to build a rig today, I'd choose the Asus P4B533 i845-E

get a 1.6a or a 1.8a. For the price you cant go wrong since they OC to 2.2/2.4 very very veyr easily. I have my 1.6a at 2.2 at default voltage, stock cooling.. I just bumped the FSB to 133 then thats it

I would go with a 1.8a. it costs about $170 and will run stable at 2.4 ghz with no extra cooling needs or special knowledge of overclocking. Dont get sucked into the high cost of the p4b's that come default with the 533 fsb. the 400 fsb p4a's will o/c to those speeds and well beyond for a fraction of the cost.

Is it 184 pin or 168 pin? Does it have 1 split in the pins at the bottom, or does it have 2. If it has one its DDR.

No, i've read alot and they don't take full advantage of what the ram can do. And ram can make a huge difference in how your system performs.
