Small rant on Customers and spyware

It seems that for some of my clients, no matter how much work I put into their computer, and how hard I try to harden the security on the PC as to keep viruses and spyware out, they always seem to nuke the computers in no time @ all. I just got done fixing a clients PC, and two weeks later the PC is ...

Unfortunately, most routers today assume the end user is a moron, and loads it up with setup wizard after wizard, and enables god knows how many features right out of the box. To this day, my favorite router was the Netgear RT311. Easy to config, and did what I wanted.

If you want to have fun, try ...

If you just setup static ips on the machines, and point each machine to the gateway you want it to use, you should be set.

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com from each machine once you set everything up, and if each return a different IP, you are good!

Another solution could be just to do away with DHCP, and Static IP everything, much simpler in my opinion :) .

If you flash the Wrt54G with some third party firmware, you might be able to edit the DHCP scope enough to edit the gateway settings.

If you are on the market for another router, you ...

You need to make sure:

1. The router is acutally picking up ISP provided IP Address/subnet/gateway/dns

2. Computers on your network are setup for DHCP, and there are no conflicting addresses.

3. The router itself is setup as an internet DHCP server.

Let me know if any of this helps!
