You have to configure the wireless adapter to have the same setting on wireless router, then can only join the wireless network successfully.

You need to set up ad hoc wireless connection between that desktop computer and labtop first (that's why you saw disconnected wireless network if this wireless link is not up), then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop computer to share Internet. Hopefully it helps..

Just get a network switch and connect all computers to the switch and enable Internet Connection Sharing on computer A only. This will allow computers B and C to connect to Internet also.

Of course the best solution is to get a wired or wireless router to build a network.

You can just connect 2nd PC's LAN card to the other PC with 2 LAN cards (1 is connected to 2nd PC and the other one is connected to Internet) by using crossover cable.

Then enable Internet Connection Sharing on that PC with 2 LAN cards to share Internet connection.

if you have Windows computers connecting to Internet, then you can tweak the TCP/IP registry settings on XP to speed up Internet by using SG TCP Optimizer. I tried it, it helped..

Go to router management page, ensure there is big enough IP range assigned on DHCP setting. Also upgrade your wireless apdater driver and ensure the driver works well.

When that computer connects to the wireless network, you can type ipconfig /all to ensure it displays correct IP, netmask, gateway ...

If you want to have your PC connect directly to wireless router, then you need to get an Ethernet PCI or USB network card. Linksys, Netgear and Dlink are the brands I trust..

Check the WAN configuration on router and ensure it's correct, then run the diagnostic tool, "ping". Try to ping yahoo.com and see whether it works. If not, then I suspect there is problem on your WAN configuration...

Also check the routing setting on router again, see any misconfiguration ...

You can disable MAC filtering on router till you solve the Internet access problem. Please configure the wireless setting on wireless router properly, after that configure labtop's wireless adapter to match the setting on router.

Yep..just connect the dlink router's LAN port to wireless router's LAN port with crossover cable, then configure the wireless router as access point only.

Ensure that the PC and labtop can ping each other, also allow file sharing on firewall if you enabled it on PC or labtop. Then take a look here on how to do simple file sharing or share file with user/group permissions.

I guess the bottleneck can be your Internet connection which has less bandwidth if you compare to home network, and it might have difficulties to support the gaming traffic from 2 computers. It's not difficult to set up a wireless network! Once your wireless network is up, you can proceed to configure the computers with wired connection manually or get IP automatically from router (with DHCP feature enabled).

If that modem works as router too, then remove that Linksys router and make your configuration on that modem router only with port forwarding. Try and see whether it works. Also you could check whether there is firewall blocking issue on PC and modem router. Hope helps..

I don't see anything wrong on your ipconfig output. The output is typical output on the computer that connects to modem with Internet connection. That IP a.b.c.d is your Internet IP and you can ping it. Maybe you can describe more about your problem...

I agree with what ErikD suggested, get a new router (wired or wireless) and set up a small network to share Internet connection. Better security and easy management.

Also you should get the Windows XP wireless client update with service pack 2 (KB917021), so that it won't simply connect to other wireless network and also the update would fix other bugs..

You must use router in this case, so ensure the "switch" you mentioned whether is a router. If it's a switch, then it's not so possible to let all 3 computers to access Internet at the same time as there is no Port Address Translation (PAT) available.
