ROTFLAMO...
Issues?
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.
I think I know why this has been allowed, but I don't remember the name of the federal law that is involved.
The law states that a school must allow all nonacademic clubs not deemed disruptive or illegal, including religious clubs, and that all clubs have some access to school facilities, and (maybe, I'm not very sure of this last) access to some funds from a general fund for school activities, but I'm not sure about this part. Failure to allow a nonacademic club not considered disruptive or illegal requires that no nonacademic clubs are allowed, or the state loses all access to federal education dollars.
Consider that that could have big ramifications, because that would mean no chess club, no Key Club, no National Honors Society, no Lions club. I believe athletics are not affected, nor are obvious academic clubs, like the math club.
The intent of the law was to make it legal for public schools to have bible reading clubs.
The one time it was put to the test that I know of was in Utah, where some kids wanted to start a club that has come to be known as a gay straight alliance. I'm still not sure what these clubs are supposed to do, but it was blown way out of proportion there. Parents were declaring their horror at these meetings where orgies were obviously going to be planned. The State legislature has a closed meeting about it(Illegal under Utah's state constitution, but whose going to censure them?).
The state decided to disallow all nonacademic clubs in schools. I never paid any attention whether there was a court trial. For reasons which I will keep private, I knew that such clubs would never be allowed there. This may have changed since then, but I am not sure, I don't live there anymore.
The strange irony was that Utah Senator Orrin Hatch was a sponsor and/or author of the law.
I've read that these kids are supposedly following the doctrine of the Church of Satan, and are not directly advocating violence or the breaking of any laws. If I'm not mistaken, the Church of Satan is a legitimately recognized church, according to the government.
The school board likely figures that they won't have a case because it could be considered persecution of a religious club.
Should this be allowed? I'd say no. If kids want a free thought club, then make one. Bringing just the name Satan in the picture is just asking for trouble. 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.' might sound cool, but I think maybe the message may be just a wee too much for kids, at least when my tax money is involved.

This "club" has all of two members. Yes, 2 students, who wanted to meet after school, became a national news story because the Drudge Report posted it online stirring up their conservative audience. There was supposed to be a protest yesterday against the club (organized by a parent) but NOBODY showed up.
Here's a link to the story in the San Mateo County Times

Chrome: That's a good summary of the school club issues. I had read about the Utah case and that all seems accurate. I do disagree with your conclusion though. If one group can meet, everyone should be able to.

My opinion(poorly stated) was mainly a personal view. If the law of the land allows it that's fine I guess. I don't like it, but I'm not jumping up and down about it, and the religious aspect only interests me in a legal sense, not in a 'Legacy of Satan is now present in our very schools!' type of sense.

well there are those that believe in different things.
I think if I or any of us spoke out about this like its bad, because we are good christian or catholics, it would be the same thing as saying there shouldnt be a Jewish club at the school.
as long as it doesnt cause trouble towards anything else going on, then who cares....its not like they are casting spells and blowing stuff up....
