I want to be very clear on this...

I have hooked a DSL/Cable Router Up to my two home PC's )which reside in the same room not more then 10 feet apart) to establish a Home Network (LAN); so that I can file and printer share, and play network games with my wife and Friends when they come visit on these two PCs. Then hooking the cable modem into the router, because it needs the same NIC card that my LAN is using(which is the reason I got a router instead of a hub). And in the process supplying internet access to both computers, quite by accident, (it was cool to find out what I had done, followed by panic of doing something illegal like stealing cable). Have I done something that is illegal, against Comcast Terms of Service, or sin on mankind in anyway.

I am afraid to call and ask Comcast Tech support some pretty simple questions, because I'm not sure if what I am doing is illegal.

My second question is, if it is against the Terms of Service, and I subscribed to a second IP address, how does this change my situation. I steal need a LAN and a WAN running into the same NIC card. I have four PCI slots, and all are full, so adding a second NIC is not an option for me.

Can someone tell me, is what we are doing, illegal?

YES.....please reply with your address so we can send a squad car by to pick you up. :p

It's only a breach of AUP if you sell the service or share it to others outside your household. Don't bother calling tech support.....it's not supported. You have a much better knowledge base here, anyway.

Sorry,, I don't have comcast. But I have 4 PCs going thru router to Internet.

That is the purpose of a router to supply WAN access to your LAN.

Have fun I doubt there is a problem. I haven't heard anyone say that it is against anyones terms to connect more than one RIG thru router. But then again someone with Comcast will hopefully reply to you.

What questions are you wanting to ask Comcast?

Well what cable dood said id true, this is the best support for any broadband ISP that I can tell.

I was just wondering if I was doing something wrong by using the router. Just because they sell Radar detectors in every state, doesn't mean they are legal in every state. They say negligence is not a defense.

Linksys Modems

Cable Dood- When I first decided to buy my own modem and turn in the Comcast Equipment, to reduce the monthly expence, I first bought a Linksys Cable Modem (forget the model number), called comcast to register it and they told me to take it back because it was in compatible, they suggested the Toshiba or the Motorola, so I took it back, and picked up the SurfBoard. Whats the problem with the Linksys Modem?

I don't think the Linksys has its Cablelabs DOCSIS certification. I haven't had any experience with that modem yet, but I've heard of problems with it. Supposedly the Toshiba 1000 something-or-other is having troubles too. The Motorola is a good box.

I use a Toshiba PCX1100 cable modem with a Linksys router.

Sure is a problem...... I took the Linksys router out of the box, plugged it in and came online with my two computers.... NO configuration. Of course I never did any configuration when I hooked up my modem. :p

Odd that you'd ask whether what you did was a breach of contract or illegal for that matter...

Cox@Home not only says go ahead and do it, but encourages it and even offers real-time support and free online support for those with question regarding the issue.

I mean, as long as you're not wiring your whole neighborhood to your home PC and charging them a small fee for the service... Although that'd be a fun comic strip to read in the paper...

Cox.net here in Phoenix does not have problem. They have seen my set up.

I really do appreciate all the feed back from you guys. Need to update all post that I put on today.

Tonight I am sitting here with everything up and running. Maybe I jumped the gun a little and started coming down on Comcast. They are going through transition, transitions means finding and fixing bugs. E-mail works, Windows Update works, I can access all web sites that I wish to, Norton is up and running, h*ll just for kicks I even enabled XPs Firewall, and both modems work, all is peaceful on my little LAN again. :p

Guess there was some bugs to work out today over at Comcast. What ever the are doing over there, it's working. :nod:

As far as speed goes, I'm in a pretty Comcast loaded neighborhood (meaning alot of user on this system), so even on @home I would get what felt like dial up speed. So what ever speed they have me running at constantly right now is the norm for me.

Keep posting guys, I have learned more in reading this board for the past five days then I knew before I found this site. Thanks again. :D

Both Modems do not work. The old @HOME supplied CyberSurfer works fine, but is costing me a monthly fee. My new SurfBoard 4100 isn't. I called ComCast and they sent me to Level 2, the dude asked for a bunch of numbers off the sticker on the modem, then said I should be able to use it in 24 Hours... that was 5 days ago.

Before I call them again, does anyone know what might be up with this.

I just use what they sold me. I had no idea what to get, but at the time, $147 was cheap...

Now Cox@Home, in the Omaha district, is selling them for $70...

i use comcast, and when i got my own modem, i called them to give them the s/n and the model and the mac address, so the modem would comunicate with their network, when i talked to the guy at comcast he said it would take 3-6 days to process, well it turned into 2 months, i finally called them and told them they suck they told me i had to take the modem they gave me to the station, and turn in the modem they gave me, so i had to give them all my info again...mac address etc. when i got home and hooked up my new modem it worked fine... so i would take the modem they gave you to the station or they will never change it. as for running a router being legal with them..... i do it and they never said anything to me.. so i guess it is alright.

I personally can`t see how what you`re doing is illeagal as all you are doing is sharing your `share` of bandwidth between two of your own pooters. Also as has already been said, as long as you are not `re-selling` any of this bandwidth to any third parties I would say you are in the clear.

Also I have just done the very same thing but my main reason for buying the router (Netgear RP 114) was for it`s NAT stuff but I then realised thet I could then run upto four pooters off the one connection quite happily. On a lighter note MY ISP ALSO KNOWS I AM USING A 4 PORT ROUTER and they have had nothing to say about it except "Oh we don`t support the use of a router" which basically means that if you have a problem with your connection that involves a router their tech`s will not help to integrate the router back into your system so if it doesn`t work with the router tough, remove it.

But like has already been said it all depends on your ISP`s rules and regulations
