I just came back from BestBuy empty handed! WTF!!!

Post by JawZ »

I went there to get 3 things.

One of which was a new DVD player which has Mp3 capabilities. I've been looking at the Samsungs for quite some time now.

So I'm approached by one of the floor people and he hands me one of their service plans and he explains to me how all the DVD drives are belt driven and need to be adjusted once a year and that the service plan covers that. I tried to say no but he wouldn't listen so I put the unit down and told him that because of his great advice, that he effectively talked me out of the DVD player. I told him that I could hold out for something maintenance free!

WTF???

So what is the dealio yo? Is it imperative to have them adjust it once a year????

I've had my dvd player for three years...no problems, no need to have it's belt adjusted :p

He was trying to sell ya the warranty. They get lotsa money for those "service" plans. I know a guy that works at Best Buy and he said they have meetings on how to dupe the customer on those plans. He'd tell ya that it was a small fermi reactor powering that thing if he could get ya to buy the plan. Yer cd player probably shares a similar platter drive as the DVD, and do you ever have to have it serviced? I could be oh-so wrong, but something tells me that the salesman wanted some commision.

In fact, I think a guy at Circuit City tried to sell me the same line on a super-vhs player. I told him to get lost, and bought it without the service plan. Haven't had a problem outta it in 2 years.

I think you should have adjusted the floor person!

As a side note:
These sales persons have to push any add on sales, especially during the Christmas Holiday season. It may be the difference of them having a seasonal job or a longer term job. I've watched our local store hire extra people and as soon as the holiday is over, the people are out of work. The reason:They didn't meet the company sales goals.

Service plans = suckers.

That's why you never ask for their help and tell them you're just browsing if they approach you. I used to get solicited for a damn GameDoctor (which more or less destroys the disk surface) everytime I went into EB.

belt driven....LMAO!! most sub 200 dollar CD players use the typical IDE drive....in fact, my Apex model M600 is an IDE DVD ROM drive....if I had the brains, I bet I could hook it up to my computer!!

More expensive ones use like a direct drive system or something...with like a seperate liquid ball bearing system for the little laser and the thing that spins the DVD/CD around....

Plus if they needed to be adjusted, the Manufactuer would say so in the manual....

How to screw over best buy!

Post by apf125 »

Here's what I have done with my cell phone i bought at best buy. I bought the phone and they tried to sell me the insurance plan. I didn't want a plan so I just left without it. A few weeks later I damaged the phone and went back saying I wanted an insurance plan on my phone. The happily sold it to me for 7 bucks. The next day I took in the phone and they gave me new one. So I have done this twice now and best buy just thinks they are making money off the plan!

This also reminds me of the time I went to best buy and bought a TV. The guy tried to sell me a 65 dollar surge protector because it improved the TV's picture. HMMMMMM WTF is that?

On a lot of DVD and CD players the drawer that you put the cd in is belt driven. There is no need for adjustment, it's either good or bad, and they can last any where from one year to about five years or so. When the drawer closes the mechanism either goes up or down to place the cd on top of the spindle motor. Which directly spins the cd. When the belt wears often the door will not close all the way or the cd will get jammed in the player.

The optical device, which reads the cd sometimes needs adjustment. It will get out of focus and cause skipping.

I've changed many of belts and adjusted the optical in my day as a tech. My best year I reapaired over 4500 stereos, dvd and cd players ect. That's about 4.5 units a day. I repaired consumer electronics for about ten years.

The service contracts are a bit on the high side, but they are worth it for very large TV's, if it provides in home service. I've heard many of customers complain that they had to find a truck, ect... to get that big-ass tv to the repair shop.

Other than that a good repair tech should be able to fix the problem for less than the service contract, depending on parts cost.
