Cat-5

Post by iceman3233 »

I have a cat 5 cable run already and am gonna make it a cross over cable to eliminate the slow 10mb hub which is the bottleneck. I already have the pinout for the crossover cable so that is no problem. I see that 3 of the wires arnt used. I was thinking i could run a telephone line up 2 of the wires, is that possible? I have seen cheap phone cords with only 2 pins needed. Is that voice only? Thanks in advance!

Funny you say that because that's exactly what I did in my home. I ran CAT5 cabling from my phone line's main jack in the living room to my bedroom, and merged Ethernet and POTS service on that same line. Not only does my phone service sound much clearer, but it also makes a single wire running around the bottom of my walls much more attractive than two of them. ;)

CAT3 cable = Phone line.
Cat5 should support a phone line. The only problem is the phone and computer on the same line? couldn't that result in crosstalk?

Umm... Well.. Not really. That's how I have it setup at home. The cable I ran is twisted pair, so that should eliminate it some.

Crosstalk is the "bleeding" of signals carried by one pair, onto another pair through the electrical process of induction (wires need not make contact, signals transferred magnetically). This is an unwanted effect, that can cause slow transfer, or completely inhibit the transfer of data signals over the cable segment. The purpose of the wire twists, in category 5 cable is to significantly reduce the crosstalk, and it's effects. Two types are: NEXT (Near End Crosstalk), and FEXT (Far End Crosstalk). Fiber Optic cable is the only medium that is 100% immune to the effects of crosstalk.
