go with a hercules card or creative labs cards. both are very good brands. I have a 350$ hercules card laying around. bought it and a week later bought another one and am using a creative labs card now. both are really awesome. i prefer creative labs equipment over hercules though. Its all in the preference though. I have given away 3 computers. 2 to my mom. one to a friend for christmas. 400 mhz 133 mhz and 333 mhz. old puters.
why would I give away a PC that would otherwise be good for Seti/Folding/ or Genome?
Give away cause there are less fortunate than you, this includes whole puters and parts.
If I know someone can afford, they pay, but if i get an old machine up and running and it cost nothing, then nothing lost but something gained...
Not yet, but busy doing so. I still need to wait for a hdd-replacement to be shipped to a friend of mine, her hdd went bad and I gave her my old 4gb one to run her comp on while waiting for the replacement... when it gets back I'll put the 4gb hdd in a P1-200 MMX (on an Asus TXP4 mobo), 48 mb ram, sb 64 pci, 6x cdrom, 2mb S3 Trio graphics, 14' screen, etc. computer. Not much I know, but I'll give it to a person who needs it. I'll only charge her for the cd writer that I still have to buy.
I've given away some components at times, like NIC's, fans, cables, the little stuff.... the bigger/newer stuff... well, I always sold it, but at very low prices, whatever people wanted to give me for it. I won't take any money for a P1 though, that'd be a rip off!
well, as far a "giving" away one, the answer would have to be....1. i have built and sold a few systems (with parts i had laying around), and have given away quite a lot of individual components.... RAM, CPUs (ask John about this. i sent him a 700MHz K7 Athlon a couple weeks ago), vid cards and the like. i get a lot of stuff either for free, through hardware trades, or at insanely cheap prices. i am lucky to have one freind in particular whose life revolves around the IT field, and he makes a good amoutn of $, so when he hooks himself up with a rash of new hardware, he gives me a call to see if i want to trade or whatever. i guess i am very lucky like that.
as far as the comp i built for my freind's son, it was about 6 months ago. i got a spare Katmai PIII-450 in a trade. i am cursed with the disease of not being able to have an extra CPU around without feeling the need to build a comp around it.
anyways, i built a nice system around that CPU and gave it to my freind's son (who is 19 and loves videogames). his mom would never have enough money laying around to buy him a nice comp, and working on his 233MHz AMD K6 (no L2 at all!!! eeeeeewww!!!) made me ill given how he loves games and all. i think i dropped $450 in the other hardware (tossed in a TNT2 as the video, but the rest was on the rest of the 'puter). needless to say, he rarely touches his N64 anymore. i hooked him up on my LAN/DSL with his own static IP, and its CS 24/7 for him. it wasn't his birthday... it wasn't X-Mas. just one day i say "hey, i will trade this new comp for that old piece you have there". he was/is stoked to say the least. ended up setting up the old piece as a Freesco server and sold it for $50.
thats about all.

I knew what you meant......
it was really just another way to say none
I have given away 2 computers so far. Once compaq deskpro 486 and one dell optiplex pentium 200. The compaq went to my grandparents and the dell went to my mom's friend. It is a good feeling but I miss the Dell. It was the only computer that I have ever seen that ran Windows 95 and only crashed about once a week under constant load.
I think the reason I posted this thread is that in this world of 1gig processors that people forget that the old 486 or pentium 1 sitting in the closet could be made good use of by someone who does not have, a 486 with 32 megs of ram and a 2 meg vid card is still a very ussable machine for typing and surfing.
And i know unfortunatly up here the kids at school that get computer time are the ones who can make the best use of that time, hence the kids who already have one at home...
The have get more and the have-not still have-not.
My kids are instucted that outside of class any extra computer time for research or projects is to be done at home, not at school, so the comp time that could be used by others is not taken up by my kids, they don't need it
