Linksys Router/LAN/Quake3

Post by shire29 »

Can anyone advise?

Have two PCs connected via a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, connected to a cable modem.

Everything works great, internet connection fine, can share printers, files between PCs no probs.

Using Quake3 Team Arena, both PCs can connect to a server on the internet and play in the same game, fantastic, me and my son can blast each other, or play on the same team across the internet, really cool.

The problem is, we can't set up a LAN game. Tried allsorts.

Now we have managed to get it to work a couple of times, but don't know how we did it.

We do a startserver on one PC, then on the other PC look in local for the LAN game and it just doesn't show?

But everything else works fine.

?????? anybody got any ideas

Cheers, Shire

i dunno much about quake, cuz ive never played it, but alot of games will use IPX protocol for LAN games, maybe u need to install that...

if u find out that u do indeed need IPX protocol u can install it by right clicking on the network neighbor, clicking properties, then by clicking add, then by selecting to add a protocol, and then by picking IPX from the protocol list(its under "microsoft")

I don't believe that Quake 3 uses IPX. What you should try is going into your Network Settings and installing NetBUEI. Then go into TCP/IP and unbind "Client for..." and "File and Printer Sharing". Then try it. That is my setup and it works fine.

Good luck,

I don't believe Quake has supported the noisy IPX since Quake1.

Quake doesn't use NetBEUI either, but I have the same NetBEUI as primary, MS Client unbound from TCP/IP as Never has....and it works fine. It should work fine with TCP/IP as your only protocol also, as I used to run my network that way for years.

Do you have any additional software firewall/internet protection junk on your computers?

Firstly let me thank all of you for your replies, I really do appreciate you giving up some time to help me.

OK down to business -

I installed IPX but still could not get a LAN game up and running - although I didn't try to hard, changing settings an all, so I am still unsure about this one.

OK next I installed NetBUE still nothing, but then I played around somemore. In my shortcut to quake I have a switch "set net_port 27988" on my PC and 27989 on my sons PC which allows us both to access the same server over the internet.

I removed this command from start up, and although I have done this before in my previous attemptds to get a LAN game going, well, wayhay, in local there was two LAN games - one listed IPX and one listed NetBUEI, not one but two. boy was I excited.

Logged onto the game and, flip, the game was so slow, call it lag or whatever, when it shoed in the listing Ping was1, when I was on the game Ping was over 600.

I tried it on both PCs and same result, something holding up the data transfer?

Still I am a lot closer - thaks guys - any more advise?

YeOldeStonecat -

I am not running any firewall/internet protection software, although I do intend to.

I don't know how to make NetBUEI primary as you have suggested, and I don't understand the comment about MS Client.

Sorry I have a real lack of network knowledge, don't know how i've got this far.

I am sure my settings are a bit odd now, I seem to have loads of protcols loaded in Network prperties - how do I know which one is primary?

Anyways, I'll keep playing around and see if I can get it working better, I now I'm close.

Cheers, Shire

Enable logging on your Linksys and see which ports its trying to use. You might want to use something like Link Logger or Wallwatcher as both are much better then the Linksys native log viewer. Sorry I only know the url for Link Logger off the top of my head :D http://www.LinkLogger.com

Now that we found you have some funky tweaked shortcuts that specify ports....yank out IPX, create standard default shortcuts to run Quake3 over the LAN...default meaning so it's on the same port. Use the funky tweaked ports for internet playing.

Good job so far!!! Well lets see. I know this is kind of hard but if you have a lot of protocols in you network settings and things are running slow, well, i would probably delete all of them and then just install: Client for MS..., TCP/IP, and NetBEUI (File/Printer Sharing if you need it). That is all i have and it runs fine. Did you unbind the "Client... and File/Print..." from TCP/IP? Just to let you know if you havent, go into Network Settings and chose TCP/IP and click Properties. Then go to the "Bindings" tab and uncheck the things that are bound in there. It will come up with some box when you exit that asks if you want to bind anything to it, just chose no. So other than that I have no idea what could be wrong. Do you get these problems with any other games? Well i hope this helps.

Good luck (again),

P.S. Any of you advanced members feel free to correct me cause I am, happily, 16 so i am working on my knowledge base also. Thanks all.

:rotfl:

hey we are very nearly there. LOL

I deleted IPX and made sure that NetBEUI and TCP/IP had the printer sharer and MS client unbound.

I also blagged some connection tweaks for LAN games from

http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake3/connection.html

and set these up with a new seperate shortcut on my desktop.

And bingo, worked great, we can now test all those new maps ect. fantastic.

Only problem is that I have to rebind MS client and Printer sharer to share files and printer - but i'm sure with a couple more tweeks I'll have it sussed.

Also when the games finish - and then restart automatically, both PCs get connection interupt, but hey it's not a major problem we can live with that.

Thankyou all for your help.

YOu just want to unbind TCP/IP. Not NetBEUI. Keep it bound to the two, just unbind TCP/IP

Have fun,
