Router keeps losing connection to the cable modem

Post by neo960 »

I have a 10 year old Nexland ISB SOHO router connected to the cable modem provided by Comcast.

For the past three months, for one or two days continuously the following problem happens. The router loses connection to the internet. Once I pull the power plug on the router and plug it back in the connection comes back. The connection lasts for about ten minutes and then the router loses connection again. This goes on all day for two to three days and then the problem goes away for about one month. Then it repeats again.

I had called comcast the first month that this happened, and they gave me a new cable modem. It did not solve the problem.

I did not have to power down and power up the cable modem to get the connection back. Just the router only. I did try powering down the modem also a couple of times, but that did not have any effect.

I have two devices connected to the router: My PC & my Vonage adapter. Both have a static IP. Both lose connectivity at the same time until I reboot the router, and so it is not a PC issue.

I am not sure if I buy a new router it might solve the problem, or if it is comcast that has issues with routers. Can anyone help?

Does the forum not allow paragraphs and formatting any longer? I had formatted the above post with many paragraphs, but all the formatting is lost when I save the post.

edited to add:
I exited out of firefox and edited the post via IE. Now the formatting is good. Weird that firefox behaves in this manner!

As much as I loved the Nexland routers back in the day (they were soooo fast compared to everything else back then).....it's time to retire it. It's a bottleneck for todays connections. It's probably starting to fail..gotta be near 10 years old now.

Hi YOSC! Can you suggest a good router to buy? I would prefer a wireless router that also has 4 ports for wired connections.

If I had to go out and buy one right now....
I'd get either a Linksys e4200, or an Asus RT-N56 Black Diamond.

They won't bottleneck your internet connection for a long time...Linksys at around 700 megs of throughput, and the Asus tops 800 megs of throughput. Both gigabit LAN.
