My preference for connecting sites is to use a "router to router VPN tunnel", so that basically you've created a WAN, and data stays encrypted and secure in the VPN tunnel with no servers being exposed to the internet.

What type of internet connection you use depends on which ISPs are available in your area. Since it's a business, you should have a business grade connection, which usually means static IP addresses, higher uptime, better support, usually a higher upload, and no restrictions on what services you run on it.

The speed of the connection you need depends on a lot of factors, what other services are running from your main site, how many users, the type of application(s) that will be run through the VPN tunnel, etc.

Many "business grade" routers support setting up router to router VPN tunnels through IPSec. Another option, if you have the same ISP providing the bandwidth at each location, they often can do the tunnel for you on their end.

Well, you have advantaged to both.

PTP direct connection from your office to the factory. No data goes over the internet ... secure to a point. You really only need to secure it more if it's that important.

DIA - the factory get's it's own internet connection and from there you add a vpn back to the main office.

PTP is great, no vpns needed, less overhead. You can manage the internet access from your site .. so you will know exactly what the users are doing. The downside is the factory will be using your connection for their internet access. Also if your site is down, the factory is down.

DIA is also good, but you need to deal with the internet, vpns, and firewalls at the remote site.

MPLS is great btw

Also, if there is dark fiber between/near your locations you can get great bandwidth CHEAP! All you need to pay for is transport.

My office has 2x 10GB links between our 2 datcenters.
