Bad ping in Ventrilo, good ping in WoW?
Gentlemen and/or ladies,
First off, thanks for paying a visit to my post. I appreciate any and all help given or offered.
I have a pretty good constant ping in WoW, usually under 150 but my ping in Ventrilo is incredibly erratic, ranging from 200 to 23k though it tends to average out around 500 to 900. This has confused me to no ends. My ventrilo server is about two hours from my house, and with only 11 hops between myself and the server (with the longest hop at 36ms) i'm not sure why it would act like this.
My download and upload speeds are very high, as I'm with Roadrunner Business Class (ran straight to the wall outlets supplied through my apartments so not sure if cable or whatever). I get 6000 download and 3000 upload with 49ms using speedtest.net to a Dallas server.
My TCP/IP analyzer results are as follows:
« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 01.27.2009 21:08
IP address: 71.42.xxx.xxx
TCP options string: 020405b40103030201010402
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500
TCP Window: 1460 (multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 2 bits (2^2=4)
Unscaled RWIN : 365
Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840
BDP limit (200ms): 58kbps (7KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 23kbps (3KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 113
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)
I'm using Vista Home Premium 64
Please help me! This is pretty frustrating!

Update
Update: I tried a ping -t to the ip address that my vent server is hosted on and it is consistently low, under 14ms with no spikes whatsoever. Unfortunately, I still see wild and erratic ping in ventrilo. I've unblocked the port used for that server in my windows firewall and I use no other firewall that I know of. Still no help.
post the tracert to the vent server.. also who is the provider for the server?
also your Unscaled RWIN is too low.. push that up some. Run the Optimizer for Optimal settings and then test again. I recommend this post be moved to the broadband section too..might get more views for help.
Edit:
testing something

Thanks Sava700. I'll try those out and post again later.
Also, how do I move a thread to a different section?

someone using torrents?? Ohh yeah that would cause all sorts of issues if someone in your home or whatever is eating up your bandwidth. Go unplug them and then test.borkthafork wrote:I thought that might be a problem too, but it seems to be working just fine for everyone else, and we really don't have that many people in there. Someone else on my network using torrents wouldn't cause an issue like this, would it? Low ping in everything except ventrilo![]()

Not my home, but my apartments. Our apartments provides roadrunner business class to the ports in our walls for free. I wouldn't know if anyone else in our apartments were using the torrents or not, and I don't even know where the router would be. Besides.... wouldn't torrents mess up my ping for everything else too, and not just ventrilo?
Yea too many on your connection will cause issues.. you need your own modem and setup. cause sharing it like your doing is killing you from what it seems. At this point without knowing more of who's using your internet its hard to say.borkthafork wrote:Not my home, but my apartments. If you have the same issues as the other person then the reason is the same... your connection is like a water hose, too many people sucking on that water hose to get water will obviously limit the amount each will get. I hope that pretty much sums it up.Discpriest wrote:Hi, i was wondering if you could solve that problem, because I've got the exact same one. Everything matches. Please if you have found any soultions, do tell me. Thank you.

If you have the exact same problem as the original poster. Best bet is to have your own dedicated broadband connection. Your own account from your area broadband provider, ect. Cable / DSL whatever you can get.

post a tracert to the vent server IP# or name. Make sure the Ventrilo ports are all open.Discpriest wrote:well i got the same problem. but i got my own internet connection..and evertyhing works just fine, except for ventrilo. Also tryed different servers..but same result 17k, 23k ping :S
Here is a good site/with example of how to open your ports. Find your router on the site

Solve please!!!!!
Ive got the same issue...
Play wow and use vent in game, wow has no ping issue at all Vent has serious ping issue but only in the evening. Im not currently working so im going to guess that this will be the same for the previous stated ppl in the thread.
Ive reset router to make sure no1 sharing, closed firewall, closed anitvirus, closed msn/steam etc.
This has been going on for apporx 2 weeks for me now and its a huge annoyance.
It started shortly after i downloaded bit torrent platform and when i noticed i had the issue with ping, i removed the bit torrent app. But still an issue. After "surfing" i noticed that ISP's or line operators such as BT were putting "throttles" on the lines that were using high bandwidths p2ps such as bit torrent application to prevent them choking the dial up connections. I contacted my ISP and they informed me that I didnt have one on and they had no idea why i have this issue. Theyre quite confused and annoyed by it aswell and are looking into the problem. I 100% believe theyre trying their best to help me as the fella i spoke to on remote assistance chat was a WoW player but uses Team speak!!!!
I still have huge latency in my Ventrilo from 800-30k and its unusable but only on a evening! During the day its 50! Its also only started after i used a Bit torrent software.
I'm really desperate for a solution!!!
