Want to backup to Snap Server

Post by themillerj »

Hello,
We are currently looking to update our backup software. As of now, we are using Backup Exec 9.1 but want to move up to Backup Exec 12. We also want to send a backup job to a Snap Server 410 that we have in a building other than our IT office. After reading up on the matter, I know we need to purchase an agent along with v.12. I assume we would need to purchase the Remote Agent for Linux Servers, but I want to make sure.
I tried contacting Symantec (that would be the most logical thing to do) but I was on hold for hours. I tried emailing, but they never responded. Finally, I tried to chat with a specialist but I just sat in queue. Anyway, can any of you guys tell me if I'm correct as to what agent we will need?

Thanks!

Actually I think you are mistaken. The agent is needed to make a backup OF the server/computer it is installed on. Since you want to backup to that server it shouldn't be necessary. Just map as a network drive, and do a backup as a D2D backup to that drive.

Besides which as I understand Snap servers there is no real way to install any software on them. They are basically a NAS device with inclusive OS which gives a simple web based interface for management.

Yup. When I finished installing v.12 of Backup Exec, I just mapped the Snap and it worked perfectly. We also wanted to make a backup OF a Snap, so I just set up a user-defined selection and viola!, the job ran without a hitch.
