Would it be a good idea?

I'm working on a layout for cabinets for the garage so that I can set it up as a workshop for my dad, only problem is that the washer and drying are in the garage.
My plan was to seperate off that part, about 6 x 12 foor section of the garage for a wash area but now my mom's saying she doesn't want "those damn walls" up.
What do you guys think? better to seperate them to keep and saw dust or metal shaveings from the area or keep the garage whole?

It was going to be a permanant wall. I already have everything planned out for it, it doesn't take away from useuable floor space in the wash area, the only thing it effectively does do though to forces to keeo dirty laundry in the haper untill she's actually ready to wash it and then take it out right away once it's dry

My mom tends to take a few days to wash, or when my sisters come to visit, they leave their clothes n the dryer.Dan wrote:not sure how to vote!
whats a "diveing " wall ?
about the closing off the work area? na,,,I say not really an issue, unless there are pieces flying onto clothing lying ontop of the dryer, but thats not really and issue IMO anyway, because mostly there are no clean clothes on that area in my house.
For alot of the projects he wants to do, I can almost guarantee so much dust and metal flakes would get into the appliance motors, it won't EVEN be funny...

this vote and the suggestions given here will help me convince her to let me do what I need to do to keep the area clean and safe for anyone working in the garagemorbidpete wrote:family vote? unless your mom likes us SG's and agree with our opinions :P

You divide the garage with a solid wall, even a low one, you will open the car door and hit the wall with it.
If you want to "divide" it for dust etc put up a rail and get a painter's calico dropsheet. Set the rail to allow the sheet to lay on the floor.
At least then it can be pulled out of the way when needed.
Just a thort.

go for it then. i take back my vote. i was original going to pick 'yes' . anyways. just make sure to tell her exactly what you said as far as ruining the machines and getting junk al over the cloth's. plus saw dust and metal shaving can not b good for the motor's like you said. and or the pumps for the washer. also. think about when he/you are working in ther. i know when im working on a project and i need to place some thing somewere. it goes anywere. so let her know you want it to b seperated to keep that from happiningCiscoKid wrote:My mom tends to take a few days to wash, or when my sisters come to visit, they leave their clothes n the dryer.

That sounds like plenty of work space so I'd say put up the wall, finished on the laundry side, paint the whole room white, add lots of fluorescent lighting, and give her a big sorting table. Might also need a ventilating fan.

can you still drive the car in the garage? does it matter?poptom wrote:That sounds like plenty of work space so I'd say put up the wall, finished on the laundry side, paint the whole room white, add lots of fluorescent lighting, and give her a big sorting table. Might also need a ventilating fan.

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous
sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box
if you really want an idea what it'd look like, here's a floorplan...

The area is in front of the laundry then.
You don't have a problem if only one person needs to get out once the car is in the garage.
If the car can go in far enough to open the door without hitting anything when it's opened then go for the wall.

dont put up a wall, put in a shopvac and run hoses by all of your machinery that produces sawdust so that you can just hook up hose A when working on machine A and all refuse gets directed to the shopvac.
My uncle has a setup like that, he does TONS of woodworking and it works out well for him since his garage is also a bar/entertainment area.
