"No serial port available" Omnibook 900 -HELP!

I aquired an Omnibook 900 series lap top for free to run a software to datalog our car's air fuel ratio. Unfortunately I can't connect with the LM-1 wideband controller.

this is what it says:

"No serial port available"

also on the device properties it says"

Communications port(COM1
Device type: Ports(COM & LPT)
Manufacturer: (standard port types)
Location: on generic bus

Device status:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reprted Problems. (code 43).

anyone may know what is going on?
modem is running on COM3 i believe? it says COM3 (in use).

is the port enabled in the BIOS ?

Does the laptop have any standard serial ports free, such as COM1 or COM2? Most internal modems will acquire COM3, which is pretty much just a virtual COM port for the modem.

What OS?

From my experience, some of the older engine diag software which works on COM ports have a hard time under Win2K/XP, is this software fully compatible with those OS's? Because Windows NT handles hardware differently than Win9X.

operating system is win xp professional.

we have it on the desktop and the software works on xp.

Com1 seems to be empty and has no use until now.

Base I/O addy for thi device is 2F8h IRQ3.
I set it in the bios as user configurable(enabled) and set it to the mentioned. under the properties in the device manager.

still no luck.

going to try and set it as COM2.

That IO and IRQ is a COM2 address

COM1 03F8 IRQ 4
COM2 02F8 IRQ 3
COM3 03E8 IRQ 4
COM4 02E8 IRQ 3

Try setting COM1 manually in the BIOS.

ok, i did what you mentioned and no good. regardless what COM port i use the laptop is having issues.

still showing me the Exclamation mark sign and under it says:
"No serial port available"

when i go into resources tab it says:
"This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem"

I went under system tools, event viewer then system and I saw an error and clicked on it.
Type: Error

Is this a 3rd party add on modem? Or an integrated one, built into the machine?

Is this the original operating system install on this machine?

I wonder if the motherboard is partially damaged? Setting the COM port manually in the BIOS, selecting either 1 or 2...something good should normally happen there.

What if you leave it set at COM 1 in the BIOS, then remove it in Device Manager, reboot, and let plug 'n play reload it fresh. Also, along with this, try disabling the modem just to get it out of the way.

no modem i guess but it has a network card on the side(3com)

Is this the original operating system install on this machine?
Machine was built in 6/1999 but has windows XP prof.

just tried what you mentioned and it didn't work. i'm also showing COM3 inuse all the time even with modem disabled.

Check for bios update at the manufacturers website.

Stop bits: 1

Flow control: NoneUnder advanced it says:
Receive buffer: high (14)
Transfmit Buffer: high (16)

Use FIFO buffers is checked.

I/O range : 3F8 - 03FF
IRQ: 04
Use automatic settings is checked.
