IE url line works only with ip address

IE url line works only with ip address

win98 machine - IE ver 5.5 , getting "cant display this page" when i use url with http://www.xxxx
but it is working fine when i enter the ip of this http://www.xxxx
appteciate your help

Well for one thing, it's not a complete URL.

DNS is foobared. The IP address might not be correct in the network settings for the DNS server.

Go to Start\Find\Files or Folders\ and search for HOSTS
Find a file called HOSTS and see if there's anything in it.
Possible that a worm created this file and entered a line so your local isp DNS server points to localhost.

Also try running the IE repair tool.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

May want to groom through your system with an ad/spyware removal tool...such as Pepki's Spybot Search and Destroy, and/or Lavasoft AdAware.

Install and update each one..and scan, remove what's found. Could have some DNS redirectors like newdotnet, or some other wild tangent junk in there.
