Joining the Army- a Saga of Eyes

Post by vinnie »

My eyes suck. For something I've managed to use 16-18 hours a day, 365 days a year for a couple of decades, everyone insists they're hopeless.

Applying for a graduate technical position as an officer in our army at the moment. Passed the first day of assessment, ie apttiude test, psych test and interview- next day I go is to front up to the officer selection panel.

Only problem is my eyes suck. I wear glasses on very rare occassion to help me read things in lectures... but that is enough to mean I need a specialist opthamoligist analysis of my eyes. With the help of an optomitrist we tracked down three opthamoligists that'll do it... need to make an apointment and save up the hundreds of dollars... before my next assessment day o.O

Of course... once we all realise that my glasses are like 0.5 and I don't really need them... then they'll discover I'm colour blind :D That'll cut down my options somewhat I suspect.

Quite dissapointed about that... the interviewer took a look at my results and my essay and tried to talk me into applying for air traffic controller... if not for being colour blind that'd be great :( Meh.

C'mon BC's aren't that bad. :D

Will your insurance cover at least part of the specialist costs?

As far as I know, no it doesn't :( This is purely for employment purposes, not health in any way shape or form.

Say.. anyone ever faced interviews for officer? I've got no idea what to expect... they've just made mutterings about high ranking people and psychologists hammering away at you trying to make you crack under the pressure. As much fun as it sounds... I'm not quite sure what they'll be asking. Any words of wisdom that can be shed on this I'll be most appreciative :)

I have gone before many promotion boards and many boards for positions or evaluations. I can easily say to expect to hear the question "where do you see yourself in X amount of years?" what are your goals etc.

Don't think of them as officers. Rather think of them as NCO's that way you can answer them with respect :D

Be confident in yourself and don't say anything that you can't prove. If nothing else many officers I know are anal. They always ask for proof just because they have no personalities and only got their position by ass kissing and getting a degree.

There is nothing wrong with a degree, I am working on my third. I just don't feel that it should be the only requirement in determining if you have leadership abilities.

Anyway, just be professional and don't forget your courtesies.
