Netscape and HTML file extensions

Post by dsl-jds »

Whenever I double click on an HTML link in a folder it opens with IE. I use NS 7.1 as my default browser and would like these links to open with it. I've gone into folder options/file extensions and have tried to change HTM and HTML extensions to use NS but I keep getting an error message that says it can't find the file although the error message lists the file. I've tried setting the options with and without DDE with no luck. Of course, I'm not sure what they should be with NS or if NS is even DDE compliant. Any hints would be appreciated.

try removing the file association totally, then re-create it.

right click any *.html file and choose 'open with'

at the prompt select netscape/mozilla from the list and check the box 'always use this program to open files of this type'.. hit ok and whalllllaaaa

also.. in netscape options you can select what files are handled by netscape etc... not sure where on netscape but you choose EDIT--> properties in mozilla

Thanks for your ideas. I know about the right click and "open with...", but it doesn't give me the "always use ..." option unless I do a browse for the program.

Here's another one for you. I have a word document with a bunch of links and want them to open with NS. If I can get the global file associations working, this should also work with those, right? Or is Microsoft going to always assume that it should use IE?

Mentions w95/NT specifically, but all the steps are application-specific so should be useful.

It's not that I'm having trouble making NS my default browser. I'd like to have NS be the application that is used when you click on a link from within a Microsoft Word document. With a link in a Word doc, you do a ctrl click on the link and it is opened using IE, regardless of which browser has been set as default. What am I missing?
