Built a nice video editing rig for a client, who, based on some of her video forums such as Pinnacles, was recommended this exact model. So I ordered it for her. Came DOA. I was once again reminded on how bad Sony's support is....she called Sony to get a replacement...they said ship it to her, and she'd get a refurbished one back in about 2 weeks. "What? I buy a brand new drive...and the best you can do is ship me a rebuilt used one in 2 weeks?" Man she was pissed.

Luckily I bought all the stuff from Essential Computers, who quickly rushed her out a brand new one cross shipped. Thats why I always buy from places with great support.

So I don't have personal experience with that drive...but I know it's recommended on some video editing forums. It's just Sony's support...same with their computers. Hopefully you won't need it.

I have to agree that Sony's support sucks bigtime. I've had a few bad experiences with them too.

Which model Lite-On? I've used LiteOn drive for a while now, but read that some of their DVD burners have media compatibility problems...

This drive would mainly be so my brother can backup his vast DVD collection, since his roomate keeps losing/trashing the discs.... friggen tool...

The Sony drive is a good performer. I have heard that the +R's written by the Sony would not play in certain stand alone DVD's (Pioneer and some Panasonics). Sony is offering a firmware upgrade on the 530 which allows 8X -R writes.

What seems to be the main rub with most burners is media compatiblity. I purchased a 99 dollar unit which now happily burns TDK and Memorex 4X disks @ 8X. It also is capable of "HD-Burning". Does this make for a super drive? Not necessarily. I feel that the best drive on the market is the new Pioneer 107 (The 106 was demonstrated to have dual layer writing abilities), however it might have a limited media list by comparison to the Plextor. I had recommended the NEC 1300a as the best bang to a friend of mind a while back. It was a fair drive, but with subsequent firmware upgrades, it became a great one. THe same might be said for the NEC 2500a sometime in the future.

You can get a myriad of opinions

I have the Lite-on (see model # in sig below) and have had pretty good luck with it for the price I paid. It took me a while to get it straightened out though. (I was running two optical drives, one ZIP drie and two hard drives....)

I would like a faster model but can't complain since I only paid like $ 70 for the Lite-on.
