That's not what I call "tons" of info, but I'll try.

Boot to recovery console (on CD, or hopefully you took advice and installed it as a boot option)

type:
disable mup.sys
and reboot.

After searching about mup.sys, it seems to be a USB problem, or a USB device having a problem.

If you can disconnect any/all USB devices it may help you boot to windows.

Try using the Recovery Console or just repair XP.

not fixed yet, I'm kinda trying to do this and attend a birthday party at the same time.

Sorry for not giving you more info, but I don't have anymore info. It's this ladies laptop and I don't have any disks with me, I'll have to work on it more when I get home.

Thanks again

Good luck.

Others with this mup.sys hang at boot found it to be thier USB mouse, or another USB device malfunctioning.

Sometimes disabling mup.sys worked, and kept working even after re-enabling it after a reboot.
Hope it works for you.

Possibly, as mnosteele suggested, a repair of XP may be another option.

Sounds to me you're in over your head. If you're fixing this ladies PC in order to get in her pants, try another line :D

The bootdisks should get you to the recov console, but I believe you'll need the CD in as well.

It isn't a USB CDRom/DVD is it? or an external drive?

Just saw this post....

That's the video driver, as far as I know. Disable it too from recov console. You will only have low res, but may get to windows to make repairs a bit easier.

What did this lady do just before the problem started?

Just keep disabling any service or device that impedes the boot to "safe mode with command prompt" like my first post's link states.

Then use the link in my first post to do a restore once windows (command line) is available. Just follow instructions on that link.

Get a pmcia to ide converter (they're cheap, ($20 bucks tops). Take her HD out, and slave it to another PC running nt/2k or xp. Copy to another HD, or CD (If the file system is FAT32, a 9x PC will do)

Or you can use the XP boot disks, and CD to do a repair (or reinstall) of XP. You may not be able to run any of her installed programs, but will be able to get her data.

You know what, I'm not sure. It may over write the users, and thier Docs, I don't know.

Get a converter, be safe. Unless someone else knows for certain.

yeah, M$ says if it's an OEM install it will overwrite users. :(

I haven't been able to find a converter at any local stores websites.

Thanks for the help norm.

Why people don't make backups of important data is beyond me.

XP pisses me off, so does the limited recov console. There isn't even a command to rename a dir.

Hey, if it's a FAT32 filing system (and some OEM installs are) you can use a 98 boot disk and rename dirs, or move her data to a new dir before the repair.

edit: Ok, it's not an OEM install and she's pretty sure it's fat32.

*Crosses fingers* here goes the reinstall.

Just boot into a 98 boot disk, and if you can see C: drive, it's FAT32 :D

You do know basic Dos do you not?

You could do that, but remember, the Documents and Settings dir isn't in the windows dir. Try renaming the Docs and settings folder in Dos (98 boot disk) first to be safe as possible.

If you can see C: from a 98 bootdisk type:
ren c:\docume~1 Olddocs

Then do the reinstall.
