Shut off IE6 Messenger w/W2K ?

Anybody know how to shut the messenger off in Internet Explorer 6 ? I'm running W2K and have not located a solution. I'm tired of these freaking messages showing up, uninvited.

You can also rename the messenger folder and it will stop it from loading. I renamed mine "messengerno"

I find the easiest way, is to simply open the program once, go under Tools, Options, Preferences...something like that. You'll see 3x checkboxes up top...."Launch with Windows", etc etc...just uncheck those 3x boxes.

I believe it's always best to disable software properly from within the software itself, there's always some sort of preferences setup somewhere.

Hey Stonecat,

Under most conditions I would agree with you 100% ! Even after unchecking all the proper boxes, messenger still runs as a process. (or at least it does on my XP boxes).

Changing the name of the folder stops this until a messenger upgrade occurs, usually through an IE update.

This is what i use to disable it :

Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then press ENTER.

Double-click the following items to expand them:
Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Messenger
Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to run, and then click Enabled.
Click OK, and then quit the Group Policy snap-in.

NOTE: Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc) is not available on Windows XP Home Edition-based computers.

I did the above steps (as per a MSKB article I found earlier) but now Outlook Express hangs for about 30 seconds each time I launch it...

???

Yes you are correct, that is probably the best way to do it. In my case I wanted to prevent someone from turning it on when I wasn't looking.

I'm so used to doing it that way I didn't give it much thought when I posted it. I hate it when that happens.
