Fake file... virus?

Post by Simulate030 »

Hey all,

Lately I've been seeing this file 'msmsgs.exe' or something in the taskbar manager... I know that's the common name of the MSN file, but I'm completely sure it's not MSN. MSN is set completely off and customized not to auto-start.

However, this file keeps starting by itself, even after I close it. There's no program that opens up or anything, it's just some file... I'm starting to suspect it's a trojan or a virus.

I've tried searching for the file but only the legit MSN file is showing up... is there anyway I can find the path of this specific fake file through task manager or something? It's very important that I get rid of this.

Thanks a lot.

What version of MSN messenger are you using? It could be that even though you think you have it disabled, QMgr is still loading and showing up as that. Do you have a good antivirus program installed with up to date definitions? How about a antitrojan program?

It's possible it is a trojan, but I have a feeling this isn't. You can get an excellent trojan cleaner from http://www.moosoft.com/ called The Cleaner. It's free for 30 days or long enough to rid yourself of the offender.

You can run an online virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
and see if anything turns up there.

Try The Cleaner and scan with it once. If it doesn't find anything, I'd almost bet the farm that it's a legit file loading. ;)
