BF 1942 will not run for me

Post by Brent »

well, i finally decided to buy BF 1942 tonight to see what all the craze is about :D

i was quite psyched about playing it

but it just doesn't seem to want to run

I installed it, I tried to run it, and no go

I have rebooted several times, i have disabled my secondary monitor, and i have disabled the AA and AF graphics settings in my control panel

When i double click the BF 1942 icon it pops up with the logo, looks like it is fixing to run, but then drops me back at the desktop

all my other games work fine, just this one

I have downloaded and installed the US retail version 1.2 patch as well, same problem still

any ideas?

Ok NEVERMIND i fixed it!

C:\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\

directory, open up the file called VideoDefault.con and edit the last line so it says

"renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1"

rather than the default of

"renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0"

Brent, one thing in seeing what the craze is about....it's a game that's really for online gamers. Single play is pretty much useless, except just to learn the maps or basic stuff. Just like Q1, Q2, Q3, UT, you play single player a bit to learn the maps 'n moves, but the real fun begins when you get into the online community. At least for me it was that way.

But with BF1942....it seemed to multiply that by 10....the online play is really engrossing, you have so much to do, which for me is one of the things that caught me into this game. It's the first game to (in my opinion...successfully) have such big levels, and have objects you can hop into and control (Jeeps, AA guns, gun batteries, tanks, aircraft, ships, etc).

Graphics are OK, nothing pushing the envelope like UT2K3, but to have such huge levels and as many variable objects as this game does for online gaming, they can't have the detail too far up.

Your experience will also vary tremendously depending on what kind of players are on the server you happen to log onto...as many are filled with newbies, others with constant lamers who team kill or sabatoge your teams equipment just to be a pain. Others who exploit cheats (like on Coral Sea). It's too bad, as I can see many peeps new to the game try it out a few times, only to be frustrated and give up due to the above idiots.

It's a catch 22 with this type of game, you have so much you can do, but that itself can make things easier for idiots to ruin the game for other "honest" players.

Thanks, heh, big post

I am a gamer, period, and online play is what i do ;)

BF 1942 is fun, i played it for a couple hours last night just figuring it out, i hopped into a couple servers online and tried it out, i've still got a lot to learn, like you say there is a lot to it, a very complex game...

the graphics to me are exellent! I like the water, and the textures are very sharp, the buildings come off nicely, the moving trees are a nice touch... i see what people say about all the 'gray' textures in the game, but even those aren't too bad, i got AA and AF Cranked up at 1280x960 and the game looks very sharp to me, way better then CS :D

Yeah they did do a great job on the water....the clear depth to it in the shallow area's is great...sand bars underneath 'n all.

Dunno what peeps are saying about "gray textures".

I beg to differ. i think the graphics are right on par with UT. although i believe Ut is slightly better I wouldnt imply that it is superiour to BF. And if you have the setup to crank BF's settings you will see it is highly detailed.. such as 1280x1024 2xaa 4xaf and everything maxed :p (yes i own BF & UT)

as for the game play.. you arent going to find a game where morons dont ruin it for there teammates unless you are playing a death match game like quake or ut etc...

UT has the advantage of increasing there Graphics due to having no diversity in the game that BF1942 has.

EA did a great job with 1942 and the graphics are excellent for what limitations they had to work with.

They get my vote on the best all around game for 2002 !

And as for the ones complaining about "Gray Textures" Get a Graphics card or learn how to set your options !
32mb cards dont cut it no more !
