Gunowners I need some advice.

Post by chimdogger »

I am looking to get some type of home protection. I have looked at some gun makers websites and did some research. Looks like Glock, Berreta and Sig are the top rated. Anybody have any advice pertaining to the different manufacturers ie: price, accuracy, upkeep, durablility, compatibility etc...

Thanks for any info

I prefer a shotgun, you don't have to waste no time aiming, and it helps those "loose" daughters get married real quick like. :D

First you need to look at who else you live in the house with. If you start unloading with your 12 gauge loaded with OO buckshot, will you shoot through a wall and hit your kids??? If you live alone then go for a 12 gauge pump with 00 buck 3" magnum shells. Go for a short barrel, 18.5" to 20" are nice. This is a great option cuz you can usually get a good shotgun about the same price as a low quality pistol. If you have things/people living with you that you don't want to mess up then consider getting a pistol. I own a glock 17 (9mm 17 rnd mags) and really like it. Very reliable and accurate, great deal for the money. Another thing to consider is, will the pistol fire without a magazine inserted. All of the guns you listed are good brands. It all depends on what you are willing to spend.

Also look into how much you will be taking it to the shooting range. If you are gonna shoot a lot you need to take the price of ammo into consideration. 9mm is cheaper to shoot that let's say 40 cal. But 40 cal has better stopping power than 9mm.

Look into some glazer bullets if you are worried about shooting through the walls of your house, i think they won't penetrate drywall if i remember correctly.

If you get an automatic pistol don't leave the magazines fully loaded, leave one or two shells out, that will extend the life of the spring in the magazine.

When you buy your ammo get hollow points, heaviest grain you can find, also look for +P or +P+ rounds.

Also look into getting a couple hundred pounds of dog around, that's always a nice deterrent.

most home robberies are done without a gun, the only tools they would be carrying are tools to break open safes and such

I keep a "LLAMA" 32 auto here at the house,I keep glaser safety slugs in it, look here which I feel are the best round for home personal protection, this LLAMA was about $150 many years ago,I like this gun,it's small yet I can fire 6 rounds very quickly, and trust me,these glaser rounds WILL put someone down, you should see what they do to a watermelon.

Quiet good advice and I can only disagree with part of it....I would not use 9mm or any pistol caliber for that matter in the house without using Glaser or other fragnible ammo...The 9mm had the highest penetration of wall media @ somewhere around 13 layers of sheetrock..

If you do not currently have or are not willing to get any firearms training I recomend against semi-auto pistols, get a revolver instead..The 8-12lb double action pull of a revolver provides a bit more safety for the untrained user..

A dog is perfect advice.....Great to scare most away and provides advanced warning...by the time your door is kicked in it's to late...

Yup....If someone enters your house you are in "Fear of your Life or the life of a loved one"

Not nice to say but shoot to stop(aka kill)...Im not saying blast a dying man on the floor but dont try any of that hit em in the leg ****..Double tap center mass-repeat if necessary ...Sight the weapon in with whatever ammo you will be using for home defense..

Please dear God keep the firearm out of childrens reach and teach them respect and proper usage...If my children even act like their pointing a gun, weather it be a finger,capgun,watergun,etc..etc... at anything but a target daddy comes out the booth with a good smack...

All the firearms you listed are great

Be safe....

Great thread guys and great responses. I have been thinking about this lately as well. I would not only be getting it for home protection, but also for sport (eg. shooting produce at some farm land, exploding targets, etc). I have done this a lot since I was about 10 years old with everything from pistols to shotguns to rifles to fully automatic weapons (AR-18s) with my stepdad.

Thanks for the info guys.

The older LLama's were nice pistols but the quality went downhill bad over the years...I see the grip safety in the rear but down by your pinkey is that another grip safety or just the frame??

I personally like revolvers and shotguns for home defense. Revolvers are pretty damn reliable.....and if it doesn't fire on the first round....there really is nothing to jam, so keep pulling!

Hi-speed, heavy caliber weapons in a suburban neighborhood aren't really that smart....if you miss, you could kill your damn neighbor or worse yet, like previously mentioned, your own family members.

I have multiple firearms and I'm trained in the use of all of them.

I also have a 87lb pitbull.....as for the rest of my own security measures...we'll just skip over that. ;)

Where are you getting +P rounds? Black Market or Police Department? You don't need to penetrate armor to stop someone dead in their tracks. Just about anything will do. My preference is .357 Mag with 158 grain jacketed hollow points. Yes I know I'm blasting through the walls!

I think your better off with a good guard dog. There is too much at risk when confronting an intruder with a firearm. You have to make a split second choice and if it's the wrong choice, well, you know the story.

Hmmm, I picked up several boxes of +P 9mm rounds a few years back at a local gun store. Maybe they have been outlawed since then. Not sure....

I don't shoot much anymore, so i haven't purchased ammo in a while

I also have a 44 rem mag revolver but I'd never dare shoot that indoors, you'd be deaf...

When I was in peace officer training, many tar pits past, we had a discussion on +P and Super +P rounds and saw a demonstration on there wrath. I don't know about other states, but they used to be illegal everywhere except for law enforcement use. Things may have changed since then, everything else has and I know the common criminal has more to his advantage then law enforcement does.

Home defense? Sawed off shotgun(yeah its illegal, but if it just lives under the bed, whats it gonna hurt?) or a nice gas fed 12 guage w/o choke with a nice number 7 or so shot. Will blow holes the size of a football at anything under 10 feet and won't go thru many walls(one layer of sheetrock will take most of the steam outta the round).

Me? I'm subterranian and can go for the gusto, I keep a .44 Magnum in the den, and a .45 H&K on my nightstand(or wherver I fall asleep). 44 goes in the safe during the day, and the .45 is my carry piece. Used to keep a 12 pump under the upstairs couch, but since I don't go up there much, it resides in the safe as well.

Thanks for the inquiry. I'm stuck with Oxygen now. The Doctor says the lung damage is permanent. I keep hoping he's wrong, but a little walking around without O2 and I'm in a near panic for air. Guess he's right? Outside of that, I'm doing pretty good. The heart valve is ticking away. I sound like a time bomb, which is cool in confined spaces. :D Just can't breath as well as I did before the heart surgery. :)

All great weapon choices :) ... I would pick a 9mm Sig Sauer. It does require a bit more care than a Glock, however anyone who has owned one would swear by its reliability and accuracy. It would give you a great performance right out of the box.

 Sig makes some great guns. I personally own Image this firearm a Heckler and Koch Tactical Pistol .45 caliber. Fine gun Highly Accurate and incredibly easy to shoot. Personally I don't really care for the Glock for asthetic purposes, but the .40cal Glock is probably used by most police forces. I would also not recomend the use of +P or +P+ ammo it wreaks havoc on the firearm and causes it to wear out alot faster.
Respect it.

Very fine firearms, ive only owned the American P220 but the 229 and 226 I shot were also great..Im very partial to the Glock though, the M23 was a very natural pointer for me and I carried her for three years till I let my CWP expire..

philip is on the money with his answer, sig makes a awesome weapon very consistent, and well built would almost be a understatement, but and there's always a but, I personally like glock it's lighter and easer to strip and clean (imo).
advice: call a few local gun shops and ask them if they have any "rental guns" is the only term that comes to mind so you can try before you buy, nothing worse then seeing someone shoot a gun with a grip thats to big it might not seem like its that big of a deal but if you shoot a box stock 9mm glock with a lazy grip (don't hold it tight) it will jam about 30% of the time, and besides it's just uncomfortable, so try before you buy and remember bigger isn't always better.
You make it, We take it !

SEAL team members have been asked whether they would fire upon American citizens while confiscating their firearms. The SEAL teams' most common answer?

"Only the ones with Glocks" :D

JK, both fine weapons, I have a Sig P228 and I love it.

Evidentally, New Jersey is about to have a dangerous dog law enacted. You must have homeowners insurance for the animal, a six foot fence and a few other inconveniences.

Amazing.....

Navy Seals, the USSS and FBI prefer the SIG, while the CIA, military and police use the Glock more...

I'm curious
Do you all carry these handguns to kill other people, dont mean to sound stupid but up here, that would be the only reason to carry.
I understand that many people like to hunt, so I understand rifle ownership to some degree. But pistols, sorry, I just dont buy it. Guns and there owners kill people.

If I had to carry just to feel safe I would get the h@ll out of Dodge and move somewhere safe, like Canada.
