Faxing in Office XP running on XP

I am trying to set up Windows XP Pro to fax instead of print documents from office XP. The fax program in windows sucks. At least I can't get to do anything but bring up endless windows about what it thinks it is going to do, but never does. Anyone know of a fix, better program for faxing from Word, Excel, et al. Would like a freeware or shareware if possible. So much to do and so little money! Thanks in advance for your help.
