By the year 2010 what is your prediction

Post by Ghosthunter »

of what the typical desktop will be?

10 ghz? 100ghz?

How much ram?

What speed video card?

I can only imagine, and it is only 2002

I predict a mass destruction of technology in 2009 leading to the return of the abacus as the main computational method.

Intel already has 10Ghz cores in testing... they are at 10Ghz as of last year...

of course it is no where near production, its only in a strict testing environment...

the general consensus we are getting from intel is 10Ghz by 2010

I think that is very possible, if not faster... depends how cheap components are by then.... manufacturing costs etc...

Vid Cards... hard one there to tell, new things being developed in EVERY card. Right now DX9/OGL 2.0 But in 2010 what API will be teh dominent one, DirectX? Or OpenGL? or some other? I think by 2010 we will have video chips that are capable of some awesome real time 3D graphics, for sure being able to run Final Fantasy the Movie being rendered in real time on our PC's, probably even have the capability to do more then that. Graphics Chips are developed faster then CPU's.....

RAM, well, depending on how the Bus system works in 2010 on mobo's i forsee things past DDR2 for sure, hell, i don't really know. I can't even begin to guess, heh.

2003 will be the year of 3Ghz+ CPU's and Graphics cards capable of Cinematic Quality real time 3D rendering (the start of it at least)

2004 will be the year of the 64bit CPU IMO

from there i don't really know lol

I'd say we might get close to what we dream of in the 80's

Isn't that basically throwing Moore's Law (yah yah, I know that's for transistors but its used for clock speeds often enough) out the window? I would think we'd be quite further than 10GHz by 2010.

As far as anything else goes, hell if I'd know. Think 10 years back. Anyone honestly think we'd have 3ghz P4's back when everyone was on 15mhz 386s? :p

who really knows, it was just a guess and going on what i have heard, heh...

Remember though 'Ghz" don't matter much really...

if you make a CPU that is completely effecient it could run at 1Mhz and be faster then current CPU's today, heh...

i think we will all have little computers that attach to each persons arm and are pc in the arm band
also i think the pc will be as small as a computer mouse
and monitors will be as big as big screen tv's

I personally think that the desktop as we know it will be gone by that time. I'm not sure about a wristwatch PC but they will certainly be alot smaller than what we currently have.

Granted, but who's going to play that card?

Its a numbers game, and the average consumer doesn't know/doesn't care if a 5GHz AMD is more efficient than a 7GHz P5 (hence, the ratings on current AMD chips).

Sure, I think someone will do stuff to make those chips more efficient, and the numbers may not mean as much as they do now (or did in the past), but they will still be there, and an important part of it.

How so? While many things have gotten smaller over the years, look at the big picture. The computers, as a whole, are bigger than they have been in a decade. True, we don't have as many full-length ISA soundcards, but I think many people (at least on the PC side) are used to having a mid/full tower at their desk. What goes IN to those cases will likely change, but aside from the niche market (people with MicroATX cases or iMacs), I don't see too many people straying from the conventional PC anytime soon. That's just how I see it...

Monitors are a different story, and I'd expect LCDs will only get better and more popular as time goes on. :p

Oh, and "normal" is shorthand for "married."

Bio-technology will finally interface computers to the brain. Imagine, memories that never fade.

Quite possibly. Would make for a fun discussion topic. \

Perhaps a "THC" button to erase a certain percentage of memory....

Have you seen the "robo-roaches" and "cyber-rats" who can be manipulated by direct electrical stimulation to sites on the brain?

We have come very far in genetic engineering. How long will it be before many of our domesticated animals and plant are unrecognizable?

Although a bit optimistic I can see the pc ending up in every room in the house at least a resource terminal. An end to traditional mail service 56k modem connections are used specifically for email. The advent of "Wide band" internet replaces conventional television for entertainment. Voice recognition now perfected has completely eliminate the need for keyboards. Video cards produce such perfect renderings of people that "virtual" people and objects are intentionally marked or flawed in order to make them distinguishable from real people.

wearable personal audio/video/cam recorders that continually record everything you do and automatically wirelessly upload to a server.

would be handy for when you get into an arguement with your wife!
ex:cranky wife " I told You to take out the garbage this morning!"
Husband " no You never"

WIfe " yes i did!"
husband " NO YOU NEVER!"
WIFE " YES I DID"
Husband " well lets just see shall we?"
husband*logs on to server and downloads morning conversation*
husband" aha there ya go! you were talking to me while i was surfing at speedguide! cmon woman you know not to try and talk to me while im reading brembo threads "

also if wife were to say "Your not even listening to me"

husband could say "yes*hits rewind* i was"* qoutes recorded wife

wtf am i doing? im going outside

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box ;).

Actually gentlemen, i've read a post that the sun will explode in 6 years and the earth will be no more. So by my calculations, if we're in the year 2002, and 6 years from now it will be 2008 and you're talking about 2010, i don't think any of us will be around to see any of it. :p

parts will be smaller maybe 1/3 or even half the size now.

i'd say 40-50ghz but there may be a major change in which teh speed is rated differently then.
