Attenuation Issues

Post by thrawn55 »

What can I do to avoid the attenuation that comes from a 2 to 1 splitter? Also, what do you think is the maximum length of RG-11 you could run and still get reliable signal? Thanks for the help!

i would say, you could run the cable easily 500 feet without any signal degradation and a 2 way splitter shouldn't introduce any noticeable attenuation to cause a signal problem.

in my apartment cox installed a 3 way splitter off my main line then another 2 way splitter and that was causing my modem to lose sync because the splitters were boosting the noise floor.

with just one 2 way splitter you should be fine.

A two-way splitter has a minimum loss of 3.5 db per port.

There is a kind of tap that is an assymmetrical splittter theat has a much smaller loss on one port and a larger on the other. somethin like -.5db on one and -6.5 on the other.

rg-11 loss on 500ft would be -15.07. thats- 3.01-per 100ft. hope u dont have a modem on this rg-11. the r.r freg. runs 8 down. twc has a new cable rg-15 the loss i half of that so ask ? to see if your isp has cable

also the reason it would cause prob. at this length the tap value would prob. need changing and this would cause reverse tilt.in return this would slow down your conn. and uploads.

I don't know if this has any bearing, but I have an 8 way splitter where 5 lines are not terminated and one line that splits two ways after that, and they had to put a signal attenuator on the end of that.
